Hello,

I'm working with an early VT2 system that has been virtually unused since it was bought new over 2 years ago. (It still has the Beta software...) It has a problem which has me stumped for a solution. Frankly, I may be a big part of the problem because I'm learning about this hardware and software as I go. So, if I ask any "stupid" questions please just chalk it up to me not knowing any better and please don't flame me too hard. OK? :)

Anyway, I've managed to create and edit projects without much difficulty...EXCEPT...when I play the project there is now no audio output. Oh, the audio stream shows up on the timeLine, right under the video stream, and the Mixer output meter is active, but nothing comes out of the T2s' audio out. (No BOB on this system)

When we first observed this problem, my partner checked the input and output cables' connections and we began to get audio out when he was wiggling things. That seemed strange because the same cables worked just fine, without any wiggling, to deliver the audio when I recorded the clips for this project.

Unfortunately, after shutting the sytem down, and restarting it, the playback audio is gone again and no amount of wiggling has been successful at getting it back.

OK, that's the problem. So, can anyone tell me if that's a hard or soft-ware type problem? It seems like hardware to me, but I can't be certain that it isn't a config problem or something else. I would really be grateful for ANY help.

Thanks,

Andy Cook

If wiggling some wire fixed the problem once, it seems to indicate a hardware (i.e., wiring) problem. However, you should immediately download the latest VT2 software. For example, the VT2 onboard ROM was updated several times since the beta software. The latest softare should automatically update your ROM when it is installed. Also, there were numerous reports of audio problems with the beta software and several of the later releases that were fixed in the last couple of updates. The audio mixer module was completely recoded in later releases. No use wasting your time with the beta version...

Just a confirmation of both John's suggestions. I'd guess your T2 audio cable is faulty. The first one I had, either the input or output half of the wire was bad. Run a continuity check or just get a different audio cable.

You definately need to download and install the latest Patch (VTP3890) here (http://www.newtek.com/products/videotoaster/downloads/), but you will need to remove the beta software first and install a full T2 Build before installing the patch on top of that. You should have gotten a second set of CDs when T2 was officially released after the beta (VTB2881). You can also order the full 3890 Build on CD from NewTek for about $30 if you prefer and just install that after removing the beta software.

Johnq and sbates....

Thanks for the info! I thought that I had heard or read something, somewhere, about the early T2 having audio problems. So at least I haven't lost my mind, or my memory.

We just got the non-beta software...don't ask, it's a LOOONNG UGLY story...and I will be installing it at my next opportunity, which will probably be some time next week.

The system belongs to a public access channel that bought it and then let it sit, unused, until I came along. I was just learning to use my Amiga 4000 T/F system and now I'm learning the VT2 on top of it. We're really having fun now! And actually, I am!

Thanks again. I'll post a follow up after I've ohmed out the cables and installed the new software.

Regards,

Andy
