View Full Version : WinServer2003 CPU time - anybody can beat that ? :)
we have a computer with windows server installed where everybody works from, and that all the rendernodes connect to.
and I was thinking today how stable it was.
I went to the task manager, and saw it was working since 14449 hours.
which is 600 days or about 21.5 months
I think it's pretty good :)
hopefully, it will stay that good..
I hope that isn't connected to the outside world and that the connected workstations / nodes are all in good shape. Unless MS did something totally remarkable with 2003 compared to every other version of Windows that they have shipped, almost every patch needs a reboot. After so many days, your server might be in deep trouble without you knowing about it.

on that computer, I don't install the updates. because that would need
a restart and most of the time, people are using it or the rendernodes are using it.
(so it's tricky to find a time to install and restart the server..)
I admit I forgot about those updates, I checked and there are like 30 of them..
don't know if it's worth installing them..
(stuff are being backed up everyday anyway..)
the thing that probably will happen soon is that one of the harddrive might fail..
but as of right now, everything is fine, server and nodes..
now I said that it's probably going to crash in 5 minutes. ;)
Grab AutoPatcher from autopatcher.com. It has all the updates as a set of downloads. You install the April full package, followed by each of the monthly updates. Saves downloading them via MS and the WGA hassle that comes with WindowsUpdate. You can schedule the server downtime and know that nothing will blow up. It will take an hour or so to apply the updates and you'll be patched.
If that machine is connected to the outside world, it's probably worth checking what is running to make sure noone has taken advantage and is using it as a zombie for nefarious purposes. Win2K3 is fairly robust, but there are still a good number of patches available for it - they wouldn't be available if they weren't fixing real problems.
thanks for the infos,
I will check the autopatcher web site.
