I have used the rail command many times, but when I try to extrude the following:

This is a flat box, just as u see it.

This is the path (almost all of the path):

This is a close view of how I oriented the object to the curve:

Ok, now what I have it all read, I push the rail extrude and I get this crap:

I have no idea why this does this. And yes, I tried both ends, the other end really gets funky. I have already rail extruded 2 other exact shapes.

Any suggestions as to why it's going wacko?? I already tried to reduce the number of points as well as automatic to a set number of knots and lengths, no luck.

Thanks!!

Oohhh I forgot to mention, I used smaller sections (like 2 point) and it worked fine.... <shrugs>

First thing first, try flipping the curve, it may be that the end of the curve is near the poly, not the start.

Ummm... I did that (points to orignal article) :D and it went all over the place.

You are not alone !
Happened to me many a time.
Sometimes cured by making damn sure that the polygons you are sweeping are indeed single sided, unified, or whatever, and then if they do that again, flip the little b****ds befor extruding them.
( 'cause it seems as if LW is starting off the extrude by reversing them itself)
If all else fails add some points 'befor' the start of the curve, and then delete the ectra 'extrude'.

happens to me once on a while, I just re-created the curve and it worked.

Hi MiniFireDragon,

I had a similar problem with funky rail extrudes, but found, (by accident), if I started the extrude on the positive side of the 'x' axis it worked fine.

Hope this helps.

Try to merge the points (m) of your splines before you apply the rail extrude tool.

It is a weird anomally. I have 6 lines to draw. 4 solid, 2 dashed. The 4 solid lines came out fine (accept for 2 oops). When I tried to do the curve for the dashed line I got the above problems. So here is what I did.

Yes, I merged the points, and that is what I got above. So I didn't merge them this time, and extruded it using even lengths. To get the lengths I took the number of points minus one and the object looked fine. SO then I took the knife and cut the object there I needed to and got my dashed line.

For those who are still scratching there head, I am building a 4 lane highway with a concrete divider. :)
