View Full Version : LW not functioning under XP

I downloaded the free version of LW from Newtek.com and was happy using it under 98. But once I upgraded to XP the modeler still worked but the Layout suddenly started saying "Cannot Initalize".
I've tried everything I can think of and I know the exec is fine, a networked PC running 98 can run Layout but the same files won't work for me under XP.. I've also heard from at least 2 or 3 others that they have this exact same problem.
Any solutions? (Config file fix doesn't help, freash install of XP, tried it anyway and still no effect.)

try deleting the CFG files in c:\Documents And Settings\YOURUSERNAME\
you'll have to re-add all your plugins afterwards though.

Sounds like video drivers. Yeah, I know Modeler still works, but...

WCameron, didn't I just say I did that anyway and it had no effect? I may not have said it as precisely as you, but I still said it.
Now.. Mattclary.. What video drivers have problems with LW in XP? I'm using a Ge Force 2 MX PCI, and I've got the latest drivers for it. Though other non Nvidia card users that I know have complained of the exact same problem. What drivers do you use? How can I fix it if it is the drivers?
And any further suggested if it's not the drivers?

I think you still need the Sentinel drivers (even to run the LightWave demo) - some of the older releases were incompatible with WinXP - try downloading the latest ones (5.41.1) from www.rainbow.com

Sentinal eh? Hmm.. Never installed those drivers since 1) I never need to before and 2) I don't have a dongle... Guess it's worth a shot.. Can't get too much worse right now. :) Unless modeler stops functioning...

WOO! IT WORKED! hey thanks installing drivers for an object I didn't have was not something I'd considered but it WORKED! Hey thanks! (Didn't need new drivers just needed to install drivers period)
Well you guys have been a big help esspecially that last guy... um.... Aegis.. For suggesting a solution that actually was the solution!
Thanks again!

Yeah you did actually.
The phrasing threw me there for a moment
"Config file fix doesn't help"
Just didnt Parse it correctly.

Don't be so quick to judge Matt :) Morthotos stated that he "downloaded the free version of LW from Newtek.com" - I guess he means he d/l one of the updates and is using it as a Discovery Edition.
Not everyone using LightWave who hasn't bought it is a pirate - I'm all for helping people out who wanna try a LightWave demo (note DEMO not crack/warez/etc.) before they decide whether to buy it or not. Judging people without all the facts ain't gonna make our community any bigger (or friendlier)...
