Don't be fooled by the title, I'm not wondering about the regualr texture baking feature.

I've heard a lot of talk lately about texture baking in upcoming games (Doom3 Half-Life 2, Star Wars Galaxies). Texture baking in the sense of creating a hi-poly character and then using that model to create a texture for a low-poly version. How would one go about doing something like that in Lightwave? If I'm not mistaken they are using Lightwave in Doom3 so I'm pretty sure it can be done.

Any ideas?

You are refering to normal mapping. Just recently Marvin Landis released a free tool set for creating such maps. Ther is a thread somewhere on the forum.
