View Full Version : Aligning objects in Modeler?

I just know there's going to be an obvious answer to this but I can't figure it out!

Suppose I'm adjusting an eye in it's socket, I need to be able to see precisely how the surfaces intersect so that the lids look right and the eye is aligned correctly. If I put the eye on one layer and the head/eye socket on another I can place the head in the background and adjust the eye without selecting it. I can have the eye in smooth shaded view but the head will be in wireframe so it's difficult to judge how they line up.

If I select both layers or have the objects on the same layer I have to select the eye to move it independently but now the mesh of the eye shows through the head surface so it's still difficult to judge their positions accurately.

I can do it in layout more effectively but it's still not ideal and it's a pain having to jump between apps for what is really a modeling job.

In other apps I use you can select in body or object mode and adjust objects without the mesh showing but this doesn't seem to be possible in LW?

So how do you do it?

With all the geometry in the foreground, select the eye, open the display options and turn off 'show polygon selection'!

Doh! Of course! Thanks a lot :D Seems like a bit of a workround though, seems to me like there should be some sort of tool or mode for this don't you think?
Still it works and that's the main thing! Thanks again! - Baz

Oh, yes, there is another way, the Drag Network tool (press the ; key) works on geometry that's connected to what you're dragging. Just set the radius to something much bigger than your object, like 100m for your eye object.

Thanks I'll give that a try!
