i have this problem before..i disable my firewall and voila..problem solved...
2 things. As said before, if you use a software like ZoneAlarm (a firewall) you must enable all ligwave programs (modeler, layout and hub) to act as internet server and clients.
If you do no use any firewalls, try to start the hub by hand, and then the modeler or the layout.

and if you dont have a network card you might have to install the
Microsoft Loopback Adapter - and I forget exactly how to do that in Windows 2k... I think you go into add new hardware, then pick Network cards, and its in there. despite being under Hardware its actually a software emulator type thingy...
- Will.
Ok! I disable my zone alarm... But I need to format c and reinstall LW? With older version of zone alarm Hub worked fine. And then... why LW needs to operate as a server? And why Lw, with the appropriate zone alarm permissions, works only when connected with the net? I run layout and it starts connecting hub. Fine. I close internet connection and LW stops to work. !?!?
I like to know why (dongle inserted and authorized licence key)
Bye
As said before, if you do not have a network card, then when you are not connected your system do not have any TCP/IP layer. TCP/IP (network) is used by Lightwave in order to exchange data between Layout/Modeler and the hub.
You need to install the loopback adapter (a fake network card that will allow LW to work even when there is no active internet connection) and you must allow this 3 software to act as a server and a client inside your ZoneAlarm. BTW it's better to have ZoneAlarm active when you are connecter on internet.

many thanks! but i installed LW(7.5) many times on my hardware. HW didn't change (I never had a network card on that machine - only ZoneAlarm was upgraded (I suppose... hw + sw run up to chaos when you install more of two or three progs under win ):( LW always worked fine. Anyway I try to understand the problem... I thank you

This thread helped me get my LW7.5 going on a new Win2000Pro setup. After I activated the onboard LAN and installed the ethernet drivers and deactivated Norton AntiVirus (which seems to intercept port comms) LW was running like back in the old days.
Just deactivating the AntiVirus software did nothing - it required the network stuff. And having the network stuff with the AntiVirus running was no good either - had to deactivate AntiVirus.
This machine is not connected to a LAN - it just has the adapter installed and is not connected to the Internet.
Thanks for the help all you guys out there!
Paul
