View Full Version : New robot model for music video
Here's a new robot I modeled and rigged for a music video I'm making for a local band ( The Punk Group (http://www.thepunkgroup.com)). This is a fairly minor character. There will be three or four robots like him. The main character is a girl robot that I showed in this forum about a month ago.
If you want to see images of the set and the main robot characters check out these links:
Robot Girl (http://www.sad-world.com/germany/germany.htm)
The Set (http://www.sad-world.com/germany/set.htm)
Anyway, this is the first time I've shown this new robot to anyone out in the world so please let me know what you think. Thanks.

Nice! I love the style :-)
Thanks.
Here's a close up render so you can see the details of the head (yeah, I know.... what detail?).

Fantastic! Great style...
The large reflective "panels" behind the robot, are those video screens?
The robot doesn't stand out as much as he could against the full set. This probably isn't your final lighting set-up, which I think could probably pop him right out front.
The models and textures look great, especially the girl robot. But what's a punk robot chick doing with no piercings?
Super work!

liquidpope- Yes, those panels are video screens. The big one will be playing a live action performance of the Punk Group doing the song. I'm not completely sure what the little screens will show.... making some of this up as I go....
Howard- Yeah, I've been a 3D hermit lately. Oh, well, at least it's been produtive solitude. But yeah, it's good to get back into the swing a little.

Robot looks strangely familar. I can't remember the movie at the moment but It will come to me....

LOL! Well, yeah, I did go with a pretty generic design that probably comes pretty close to alot of different robots out there. I'm probably just lazy but I like to think that I like scifi cliche. At any rate, I hope it's not a total rip off of someone elses design.

Oops ment to say not the 'Robot' but the Robot Girl looks familar. The movie was Bicentennial Man.

Nice... original work and refreshingly retro. Good environment, too... Only one thing; his head looks a little bit squashed - how about widening it a little more?

Hope I get this good some day.
Personaly, I,d dirty the whole thing up a bit, but who am I.
Your work is something for me to aspire to.
Well done, great work.

Wow. Thanks.
hehe.... I knew it was only a matter of time before someone sugested dirtying it up. You may be right about it but for now it just seems right to leave it clean.
Here are some more renders of my robot character. This is the actual set that they will be featured in.

Nice!
Is he rigged or you using IK?
The sets a little gloomy, maybe its all the grey...it needs, well depending on what the videos going for, some volumetric atmosphere! Real lights reflecting in the nice chrome....wheres the light coming from?

Great work! I hope to see the final animation!!!!
This lighting is completely temporary. I should have stated that. I'm working on putting a rough animation together now. Once the time and camera stuff is worked out I'll go back and completely rework the lights. I'm kind of afraid of that phase since I'm pretty ignorant about lighting (*sigh* again, too much time spent in modeler and not enough in Layout). Oh well, nothing like learning trial-by-fire style. My real concern with the lighting setups is keeping render times under control. This project could easily get really out of hand if I don't watch out for those damn render times.
As for the rigging, yes, it's rigged with IK, control nulls, expressions, weight maps and the like. I'm very happy with the rig on this one. Very fun and nonfrustrating to work with. Seems like I finally have a pretty good handle on character rigs.
Great work! I hope to see the final animation!!!!
Thanks. It will probably be at least a few months before this thing is finished but I'll definately make it available to download. Tomorrow I'm getting a rough cut of the song itself so maybe I'll put it up as an MP3 (don't worry, the band is cool about me uploading their music) to give everyone an idea of what this video is about.

OK, I just uploaded a very rough version of Germany (http://www.thepunkgroup.com/germany/), the song that the video is being made for. Sorry for the low quality, but this was captured from a minidisk player by my cheap *** sound card. The final will of course have a mastered version of the song transferred properly to the video.

Dude...!
This is possibly the best work on the boards right now.
The style is amazing! I think the lighting's really not bad, just the one shot of the robot in front of video screen looks a little flat. But, once the video is playing, you'd probably want the robot less in the foreground anyway, and the backlit effect would be correct for that shot. I'd love to see that still again with a video image on the screen. (hint hint)
Love the robots, love the sets. I haven't anticipated a new animation more since A Bug's Life. Really!
Oh yeah, that music kicks boo-tay. Kinda has a retro-new wave feel to it, which so nicely compliments your models/sets. And I'd leave the robots and sets clean. The robot has a sadness about him, the sets are on the stark/cold side (which I'd personally emphasize more) which just seems so right. Good contrast.
This is the best stuff I've seen all week! I'm lovin' it!
WOW!
liquidpope,
Yikes! Now the pressure is really on! Seriously, though, thanks for the comments. I do most of this work in isolation so I never know if people are going to 'get' what I'm doing. You've encouraged me.
Very nice work. Goes to show that a little isolation is not a bad thing. I also hope to see the video when it's ready.
As far as the lighting goes, it looks more as if everyone has left the club to go home. Not quite lit for dancing, more like lit for the cleaning staff to do their stuff. The corridor is good though.
And yes, do not dirty up, it looks good clean.
