Quick question - what is this poly???

Hello guys,

I'm making good progress in understanding poly flow in box modeling, but I am curious as to what this poly is...
The first pic shows that the angle doesnt affect its blackness (dot mode)
the second pic shows the poly unflipped and in poly mode
the third pic shows the poly flipped.
The weird part is that it doesnt have that directional dotted line which points either inwards or outwards.
Also, it happened when i added edges and started cleaning up a little to controll the jaw line poly flow.

It.s a non-planer poly.
if you just move one of the points it will clearup.

I still wonder though, how are these created?
Just randomly? or is there a certain thing i should avoid doing in order to avoid these?
ive also heard of n-gon, is that the same?

created by moving points in subpatch, which looks fine but un-patched, the polys go to thier real position and some are pulled past thier flatness limit.

they show fine in patch level and will render correctly tho as bryphi77 says.

had a quick fiddle to create one intentionally, and yes, you are very right guys :)
