Hi everyone,

I am wondering how one imports 3DS or .PLY models into Lightwave? The only import function my version (v7.5) shows is the EPSF reader, and that doesn't seem to do anything.

I frankly find Lightwave's modeler to be a little clunky, and am wondering if there's an easy way to get models from other programs like Animation:Master or ZBrush into Lightwave. I'm sure there must be a way, but I can't figure out how.

Thanks!

Arka C.

You can load .obj and .3ds directly in Modeler, just as you'd load a normal object. There is no separate "import" menu entry for those.

I think there might be a .PLY loader as well, but it might be proprietary.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi All

I'm looking to import 3ds files too. I will be doing work with a friend who works out of AutoCad. He exports the base models to 3ds and I import them to Lightwave. But When I import a 3ds file it all appears as on layer or in my mind one object. I can't manipulate or move, what use to be an object, like a wall or chair or desk in the scene? I can only manipulate points and Polys?!

I was expecting some more dept from the import requester? But no just import pretty much and bamm, one lump of an object, which appears miss alighned. Peices struine all over the place. Not what I was expecting. Anyone any ideas?

It's my first outing, and as do we all, I really need to get up to speed. I've dug my nose in the manual, but it says nothing specific, and shows loading files with no problem. Has anyone encountered the problem I am having?

Any help or direction would be great.
