Not sure about the Apples, on the PC side...
AMD Dual, Dual cores is the only way to go for 8 threads..
Opterons, 940 pin with Tyan dual proc mainboard...

AMD Dual Cores work best with 4, Dual Duals work best with 8 threads..

Quad Power Mac G5?
:cursin: budget is an issue. Besides spending $16,000 to get the ram so it works to the best of its ability.

You don't need to buy 16 gigabytes of RAM from Apple. Just get the stock amount, and add more later.

You don't even need 4gb ram. My old 2x2 G5 has 2.5gb, and renders fastest with 8 threads. I got even more efficiency on long renders by using 2 copies of LW for a total of 16 threads rendering. 2 frames rendering simultaneously finished in less than twice the time.

You're making a mistake if you're judging Macs after using only an iMac for graphics, especially 3D.
