I have been using a 23inch Cinema for a year or two now, mainly for my visual effects and design work (including some fine art photography too). For the most part, I have been very impressed. There have been a few issues around the borders of the display (slightly different backlighting, or a fringe of green or magenta) that I'm hoping to have the Apple store take a look at.

Dell makes surprisingly similar displays, sometimes even using the same LCD panels (though even then, backlights are still different, resulting in different image qualities). Here at work I'm using a 24" widescreen display from Dell (in this case, the same resolution but different dot pitch makes for a slightly different size). I haven't had a chance yet to bring my 23" Apple in, but I do want to compare them side by side sometime. Though without actual comparison between the two, I've been really happy with the Dell. And it's a couple hundred dollars cheaper! The Dell also includes more connection options, including component and S-Video inputs, making it a far more versatile display.

Before people think I prefer the Dell... let me tell you, the Apple is beautiful... what can I say, I'm a sucker for anodized aluminum! :D Hopefully I can bring it in to work shortly, and I'll let you know my thoughts on the side by side comparison.

I'm using two 23" displays. Love it! Just remember to get the recommended clean solution and cloth from Apple also. Plus only clean the screen cold.

I was reading an article comparing top line dells (such as the 24") to the cinemas. The artical said that the monitors were pretty much equal quality, although I do beleive the dell came out better in contrast. The dell, though, releases heat (not an enormous amount), where as the apple doesn't. The Dell as Iaian said is a little cheaper, but it is all a matter of preference. Also you should consider compadibility. Im guessing you have an apple computer so you may get less problems with an apple monitor. Im not really sure about this though.

really? I was reading completely different news (albeit about the 30inch models).

I'm considering getting another 20" Cinema, so I would have 2. I think having 2 20s would be better than one 23" or 30". Of course I do mostly editing, with very minor 3D work. But personally I think it would be better to have 2 displays, one for layout and one for either dialog boxes or modeler. Editing wise, 2 monitors is always better than one. Right now I just have a 15" NEC and the 20" Cinema.

All the articles I have read say that exact same thing about the Dell and Apple displays, both use the same LCD panels, different backlights, both are very good displays. If you have an Apple box, I would spend the extra $$ for the Apple display. OS X talks to it different than other monitors.

I've used a few apples and a few of the other brands... Apple is the only company with any experience in this field. it shows in their product. remember Apple was one of the Very first companies to offer an LCD monitor. I've had the 17" and I now have the 23" aluminum at home. They are the best monitors I have ever had, and thats saying a lot.

thanks for the comments up to now.
i mostly do graphic design, motion graphics and less 3d by the way.
i also thought of getting 2 20inches but 2 monitors is just not for me i think, i can't get used to it :)
i think i will go with the apple 23inch cinema , not with dell just because i own a g5 which will make them a team :) and the design of apple lcd is better i think.

thanks all

I think the 23" is the best monitor I have ever had.
I can nearly not wait for it to break so I can upgrade it to the 30" ;-)

They are the business, do not hesitate.
At the same time I got mine my friend bought the 20" Lacie Monitor, which can swing portrait or landscape. But you can tell when he sees the Apple Monitor he always makes a remark about how good it looks.

Go get it.

I beleive the article I read was on the 20" wides. But who knows, Apple may have improved their models in the last month or so.

actually they just recently doubled the contrast ratio on the 30" (if I'm reading those Crazy 'subjective' measurements properly)
http://www.macobserver.com/article/2006/03/29.1.shtml

so yeah, they did improve their models in the last month

This is my first post here. Hello.
I use two Apple 23" Cinema displays.
I like them very much, they are sharp and have nice color. The only thing
I don't like is that they differ a little as far as color and brightness.
I have tried to adjust them, but can't seem to get them perfect.
They give me lots of desktop space.

so are you saying that the computer doesn't boot?
or are you saying it boots but the 23" stays black?
or are you saying something else?

I'm running a brand new 20" ACD, and a very old 23" ACD (The old Acrylic version). I've had the older display for about 3.5 years, and it's still going strong, albeit I have noticed a dead pixel that I had never seen before. For Lightwave, I think that 2 displays is almost a requirement, so you might be better off money-wise with 2 20" displays rather than a single 23." You can use one window for Layout, and another for Modeler.

ok i have returned the display today and they even couldnt give an exact date when the new one will arrive. zero costumer support for apple here in turkey.

they never bring the new stuff until the old ones in their stock finishes. like there is no intel based macs in turkey yet.
enough!

i purchased a 23 inch apple monitor 2 years ago. i notice some discoloring around the edges, but did nothing about it cause i notice some other people had the same problem with the 23 inch. now the monitor is virtually unusable, with ghosting appearing also. spoke to apple, but they said there is nothing they can do to help, as they can not replace the faulty part and is out of warranty. i will not be buying apple monitors again.

That's a shame. I type this on my trusty old 22" (acrylic surround). Bought it just after they were first released. Still going strong. If I turn the screen completely white there's a slight tinge around the egdes, but this is mainly caused by the viewing angle (when I move my head so it's perpendicular to an edge, the colourisation disappears).

Would love to upgrade, but this bloody thing looks like it'll work forever. Best £2K I ever spent!

I bought a 23" Cinema when they first were released, and it is still going strong after many years of intense use (10-15 hours a day). Not a single dead pixel! I bought a 30" Cinema about a year ago and it is a lot better (clearer/brighter) than my old acrylic 23". And I'm planning on purchasing yet another 30" in the fall.

Both my screens are regularely being color calibrated using the Pantone Eye-One measurement device. Works like a charm, and I have perfect colours compared to print colours and my PAL broadcast monitor. Recommended if you need absolute color control. :)

Here's something to consider: The Dell monitors rotate 90°, so in a two-monitor setup you can orient them vertically and stretch your quad view across them. You'll have a more appropriate aspect ratio of the panes, and still have room for all the palettes across the bottom. Don't want two? Well, hunt for those Dell discounts and apply them to the Outlet and you can get a 2405 for under $600. Compared to a Cinema 23, that's a two-fer.

Mind you, I'm a lifetime Mac User and in fact own a 23. It's awesome. But I love cash more than I hate PCs. (I put some black tape over the Dell logos so I'm not reminded of my sin.)

I use the 2005fpw and I use both kinds (older and newer) of apple cinema displays at work. They are not the same, dell is way too bright. They use different illumination.

Way to bright? Why not turn down brightness then.

Way to bright? Why not turn down brightness then.

You would think it would be that simple, but The lowest brightness setting on the Dell seems like the highest setting on they apple cinema display. You cant durn down the brightness enough on the dell :screwy:
