Hi there, man! Very nice indeed!!

How did you achieve the sss look on is skin (ears especially)?

Very nice modelling and texturing. I miss a bit more texture on his t-shirt/sweater, though. Right now it looks very clean.

And I would perhaps go a bit more easy on the clumping of his hairs. If you want it that clumpy, maybe you should up the specularity a bit.

Hey Andre.. thanks for the comments.. I know I could have done more with the shirt but I guess my main focus was the skin in general. As for the SSS look, its just a fake actually... used an hdr map with 2 bounce cards and a 2 bounce monte carlo. The glow in the ear is just a small point light with shadows turned off. :)

Nice. How'd you do the skin texture? And what kind of lighting are you using?

Duh, I just saw that you mentioned the lighting in your post. I'm sick today, sorry. Not with it.:(

Hi l. a. akira,

Great work!
Man I thought it was a photo at first glance.
Very nice. I know you mentioned the lighting for the ears
but what about the overall scene lighting?
Did you use radiosity at all?
Also very nice texturing on the face and the eyes.
The only thing that gave it away as CG a little was the
hairline at the top and that is good as well except it has a little bit of a hairplug look to it.
Any tips on lighting for faces as I'm working on one now also.

Cheers,
JS

Awesome work!!!!

How long did it take to model and texture??

Hey guys...thanks for the feedback. been kinda busy getting the next image done.

modelling took me about 6-8 hours. modelling the expressions and extra stuff took about 2 days.

I used an HDR map, one area light, a point light for the ear and two bounce cards with a 2x monte carlo for the overall scene. The luminosity on the shirt is also about 300%.

As for the skin, I started with photos, mapped them onto a uv and painted over it all.

Hope this helps :)

The image that made it through CG talk's front page.

Very good! The background takes away from your model I think though.

Awesom work!

Oh...I like this a lot! I think he needs a tad more spec, though.
Do you have falloff on the ear point light?

Well this will be my last post as I am about to jump through the window. Life as a 3D Artist wannabe has no point in the face of such a masterpiece. :D

I find work this good to be inspiring, not disheartening. When you see that this kind of thing CAN be done, then you have to think, "I can do that, too....eventually." :)

Inspiring to say the least :)

I'm a little baffled by the lighting though. HDRI, 2 bounce Rad, Area light and bounce cards; two questions, firstly, how long did it take to render, and how did you avoid the scene being "washed out"?

I think the lighting is great, but I wonder how it would look with a more direct/prominent light source, like the sun. I think it could boost the realism, but you would probably have to lose/change the background image.

What resolution did you paint your maps at? I'm currently donig one at 2048*2048 but find that it's not large enough, especially for finer details and the bump map.

Great stuff, hope to see more soon.

Hi l. a. akira,

The only thing which I thought looked a little off and very CG were the eyebrows. Especially the right one, (characters right), which looked painted.

Otherwise this is an awesome piece of work.

Wow, very very nice. I especially like the hair, because it looks like mine, only shorter! Don't change it!

Wooo, that's nice.
Teeth might be a little too white, or mine are too yellow (damn coffee)
:D

Are the eyebrows done with Sasquatch or geometry? They don't seem to cast any shadow.

Something with the tongue is bothering me. I think that it looks blistered or something or maybe too smooth.

Maybe it needs those tiny little bumps that are on the top and also a line down the middle.

OMG. -Just getting better and better. And when we didn't think it could be any better... yeah, you guessed it! It became better!!

I'm still wondering about the sss setup... Where did you place the point light to get that soft tranlucent look in the ears?

Great Job!! Keep it up!

I am gobsmacked - that is just nose-bitingly good! The first picture of a person I have seen that I thought looked 100% realistic.

Possibly the finest image posted here in my opinion.

Everyone, thanks for all the comments. I was originally planning to render out some different expressions but i'm kinda pressed for time right now. Maybe I'll mkae a couple of new ones once LW8 comes out. :)

I'd go with or. Those teeth look yellow to me.

If those are yellow, then mine are orange... he he...

Maybe (sure) more reflections or specularity on the teeth....

Greetings!
The texture on this is awesome. I think that the right side of the face is off though. Maybe the eyes are to close together. From this angle the right side of the face moves inward. This perspective problem is rather distracting. I do have my own troubles however, I'm currently creating a mailbox for a web splash page. Maybe I'll post it for rewiew. Keep up the good work!!

The small wrinkles around his eyes...are they bump maps? or part of the mesh?

Really nice work, however like some of the other people have posted, reduce the size of the bump on the tongue, it looks kinda weird!

If you messed up the t-shirt a bit. then i wouldn't jave known it was computer generated

ohhhh the tongue looks a bit like mince. Excellent work though.

The tongue does look a bit blistery. I'd love to see how you used the photos as textures (as in what you had to repaint, etc....).

Given the astonishing realism of the ret of the face, we may be missing something here. Perhaps the answer is not to change the tongue texturing, but to get Gerald to a doctor fast!

:D :D :D
