It sounds simple and unrelated, but after trying everything in the world to get CS2 stable and speedy (it was running and lagging...and freezing on me) someone informed me that I should turn OFF font preview. Yes, it sounds odd that this could effect almost everything in PhotoShop CS2, but for some reason it was.

GO: EDIT->Preferences->Type-> and uncheck Font Preview (there is a drop down list of sizes there).

I wasted a whole day trying to get this working only to find this simple solution made things right for me- and I don't want anyone else to go through what I did! Now I can use any brush etc. with no problems.

PS- I think this is a platform independent issue and can seem more problematic when using a tablet with PS and a large library of fonts.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't noticed any problems yet but I'll look out for this.

Yeah this year was my first time owning the CS suite (CS2) and though I'm more than happy I was surprised at the amount of issues/problems people have been having since this is such a "standard" group of applications with such a large user base when compared to the fairly stable 3D apps I use. Plus, maybe it's just me, but Adobe's troubleshooting area of their site isn't that easy to use OR get answers from.

Oh well- it's working now...

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven’t had any crashes but it seem to take an eternity to load. I just tried your tip and it loads much faster.

Thanks again from an extremely impatient user.

Let's see if i can start other programs now when CS2 is running (or that Maya doesn't go bonkers when CS2 is running)
As for Adobe, i think they got too big, and want their paint program to be able to do everything humanly possible (making coffee might be in the next update).
As for support, it's laughable, i have been banned from their forums in the past for pointing out stupid things in their software, i'm a paying customer, i cough up that 500 euro update for all their buggy software hoping it will get better this time, but alas...I blame the Adobe fanboys turning my post into flame wars, telling me the problem isn't with the software but with me (riiight, unnavigatable workspaces, cpu hogging empty comps, my problem..right right)

Maya shouldn't go bonkers with cs2 running. What sort of problems were you having?

Well, still not solved...CS2 is such a piece of junk...sigh

But to be a bit more constructive, when CS2 is running certain P2P programs won't even start (for example Emule or Azureus, yes sue me, i like to download BSG). Maya sometimes won't render, won't show menus, won't save...the moment you quit CS2, Maya functions just dandy again...
I've noticed this behavior with a lot of programs, but i made a habit of just checking whether CS2 is running when XP or programs go ape-poop.

Uninstall Versioncue and youll see such a difference.

Hmmm, the Version_Cue folder is empty, and when i try removing the Version_Cue dlls from the CS2 folder i get an "unrecoverably error, can't continue" error (even when uninstalling the dlls using regsvr32 /u)

Ahwell...
