I have been suffering serious slowdowns in the last week or so, and I think I have found the cause - it could well be affecting others so I thought I'd post it here.

The symptons are that modeller or layour slow down almost to a halt - it's hard to tell the difference between this and a total freeze, but you can stll minimise or maximise the applications.

Using ctrl alt del to look at processes, I found MPENG.EXE was devouring CPU, and I could not lower it's priority.

I found the answer here:

In brief the new version of microsofts anti spyware prog, Windows Defender, part of One Care, seems to go nuts, and it appears to be related to large numbers of images on your hard drive.

I'd strongly recommend staying with the old one until this is fixed.

Is this the same program that when in beta, considered Windows Explorer a spyware application and shut it down?

Thanks for the tip.. I'll stick with McAfee.

Don't know - I stick with Firefox, many fewer problems with unwanted stuff moving onto the machine...

Beleive it or not I found Yahoos antispyware program to out perform Microsofts, Spybot's and Norton. Not only did it find more but it removed what it found.

I did not know there was one... Is it a freebie?

Yes, it is free. It is part of the yahoo toolbar. I beleive it is optional.

Hmmm.. Maybe I'll give the Yahoo one a try. NIS has been a royal pain. It took three days to upgrade from NIS2004 to NIS2006 because its 2004 LiveUpdate program refused to be uninstalled and 2006 wouldn't install because it saw the 2004LU, and said LU had to be uninstalled before it could update. It took several days of searching for ways to manually uninstall LU, but I finally did it. RRRR... Now, something, somewhere keeps turning off the NIS2006 automatic LiveUpdate setting. I can sit here and watch the status window, set it to automatic LU, wait a few minutes, and ding! It turns off by itself...double RRRR... running Spybot and Ad-aware and Norton antivirus show no malware or viruses... Maybe it's time to add a second antivirus/spyware program and see what it can find that Norton/spybot can't.
