This is an image we are going to send to expose. Hopefully we make a chance to get published in the book...
Please let me know what you think. We can't change a lot anymore but minor changes might still be possible.
Thanks,
John

Nothing to complain about the boats etc. Just the physics! The anchor chain would never get that taught in real life, even the ones from the big ships never get 100% taught. Also the bouy (thats right) is not going to lean that much with that calm a sea. Nice pic though!

You are right about the Physics!
The chain is actually a little bend but you hardly see it. I will try to change it.
The bouye is going that way bacause of the strong current. (Ok, I made that up...).
Let me make these changes and see how it looks like.
I really appreciate your remarks. True they are!

Here are the changes...
Hope this is better!
John
I agree with Rei. The buoy is still to angled. The chain is better.
I don't like the clouds. Can you make them more realistic or tone them down so they don't stand out so much. Other than that nice job.
Cheers,
JS
Ok, a few more things now. The waves dont have one origin, if this is out at sea (by the looks) then there is going to be one wave direction, sort that out. Other than that, the anchor would not be a chain if its hit the bottom, they are only a chain from the achor for around 5 meters, after that they are just a rope. As this isnt meant to be 100% then that isnt that much of a problem, but all the sailors will point that out! And there is only one current, the boat will be in the same line as the anchor, the Bouy will be pulled in the direction of the boat too, and the other boat would be facing the other way. (but like you said there isnt much time left to change and its for show!)
Ohh and I agree about the sky.

Nice pic, how long did it take? The lighting is pretty good, the modeling is great. But I must agree with the sky, it is a little bright and "strong". I would tone it down a bit. Otherwise, great job, keep it up. And one last question, how many polys are there?

Thanks for all the remarks. This really helps out with making it better and see with eyes unclouded. I porbably looked at it too much.
I agree with the physics. The yacht on the left though is almost going for anchor... It is just laying still and enjoying the sunset. (ok, I talked myself out of that one...).
It took in total 3 days to render. It is made in 3636 by 1450 pixels. I rendered ocean and yachts in different passes. And since no one like the sky (me included), it will become 3 passes.
The new sky will be posted today. Some changes I can't make for obvious render-reasons. I don't know the exact poly count but it will be big since the ocean is already 30 times subdevided.
The updated image will be posted today. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions,
John

This is version 1.3
Thanks to everyone form this forum and CGTalk I made a lot of changes...
- Different sky
- Lighter Ocean
- Anchor chain has gravity
- Buyo is now more straight up
- Yacht on left is now lower in ocean
- Yacht on right less white (sterile)
- Ocean at horizon has less waves and more fresnel effect
Thanks,
John

Hey John,
That's a big improvement on an already very, very good picture - the modelling and texturing of the boats is brilliant, well done!
For me, it's just the sky though - it has "SkyTracer2" written all over it! That's no criticism of you - I'm playing around with an ocean scene at the moment myself and although I've got a nice looking sunset, it's still SkyTracer if you know what I mean! (You'll probably tell me it's not ST at all now just to make me look stupid!!!)
If you could get a "real" sky in there, then I reckon you will turn this picture from being very, very good into world class.
Anyway as it is I really like looking at this picture - a real sense of warmth and calmness to it.
Good luck with getting published!
Adrian.

My critique is composition. Where's your focal point? The addition of the buoy in the BG adds depth and something to lead your eye, but the buoy in the foreground is distracting, especially because it's red.
An old rule is lining up your elements on the thirds for a landscape comp like this.
I think the most important thing that you have to do is compose the image better. THEN you can worry about the nit-picky stuff.
Hi John,
While much better I still have to agree that the sky has skytracer written all over it. Use Eki's skygen or a good photo instead.
Oh also the boats seem like they are lifeless. How about a few bikini clad yound ladies on the decks waving at us. :>)
Cheers,
JS

Thanks.
I agree with the composition however, sometimes I like to do something different then following exacly the rules of design. In this case the 2 yachts are both the focal points.
The sky is indeed visible skytracer. I could have taken a photo but we never have clouds here in Arizona :)
I just sent in the image this morning so I can't change it for the challange. I might still change it for the fun of it.
Thanks for all the remarks,
John

hmm, the content itself is stunning, but the composition is poor.
That would be the only thing i could suggest. Perhaps painting some cumulus clouds would be another, just to push it into hyper realism, and not 'that kinda looks like skytracer'.
Just a thought.

still some complain bout the physics.
if the chain lays like this, the the sea is about 50cm deep and the chain 50m long.
or the sea is 5m deep and the chain 5km long....
then the boat is to small....
look at it:
http://gallery.toptotop.org/sailing/aal
a boat is not holding his position because of the anchor. its because the chain that lays on the ground.
happy waving

Thanks for the feed back.
This render is just an artist impression. I did send it in already so I might just keep it as is. I appreciate all the remarks though. Next time a better design...
