Could one produce a DVD with 5.1 Surround sound with VT[3]?

How?

Or perhaps this should be a DVD authoring software question...

You're thinking of Vegas 4.0+DVD. ;)

hmm. that would be a "no?"

whatever it is that i'm thinking about , ;) , i suppose i would also have to do some of the work in a system with a 5.1 audio card for mixdown.

maybe i can do my base video edit in VT[3], then sync up, mix, sweeten and process the audio on a second workstation that i haven't built yet.

thanks. i'll have to research this further elsewhere ($), i suppose.

Eugene is right...

VegasVideo 4 is a great fallback setup.
If (like me) you can't afford 2 or 3 Toasters, it's good to have an extra project capable machine with Vegas Video. The Acid/Vegas Sound functionality fills the little gap in Toaster at the same time...
Plus... you don't have to go "($)elsewhere"... it's cheaper than Premiere !!!

Well, I don't know about doing a 5.1 project in Premiere (more homework to do), but at least Premiere can handle RTV's using Bob Tasa's plugz, Or, I guess I can do the primary edit uncompressed in T1, then AVI wrapper the video to Vegas?

Either way, because of the audio mixing issue, I probably have to build a separate workstation with the appropriate 5.1-capable audio hardware....

I don't think there's necessarily a need to build another workstation for the 5.1 audio work, although it's nice to have. Creative Labs makes the Extigy external audio device that supports full 5.1 and even has optical IO. It plugs in to the USB port on the workstation.

I'm not sure what would be involved in switching from Toaster audio to the Extigy and back again, although you could always set up two hardware profiles to choose from on boot-up, with one using the VT's audio and the other another 5.1 capable card. I'm doing that now on one workstation for other reasons.

Warmest,
Stivan

Speed razor 5.5 has audio and media post built in now
the audio errors have been fixed.
The audio post works with various cards including, I think, the mackie card which has 5.1 mix facilities with razor.
