hey there, im new with LW-- but regardless, I'm looking for help tutorials for the BESM shader-- my goal is to imitate anime as best as possible-- I've looked around and seen some good examples, but many bad ones as well. Anyways, thanks for the help in advance

I think you're better off actually applying the shader to one of your objects and doing some test renders while tweaking the settings, coming back here, posting a few images and then asking about some help.

You will find that people aren't too keen to help you unless you're willing to try first yoursef, or correct me if I'm wrong.

i already have done that... i will post the images now...

obviously its an incomplete model, but im using it just for tests-- this is the closest that i have been able to get to anime style with BESM-- but it still looks too odd in my opinion

I think that the inklines are too square---but this might just be from the fact that its a lower polygon model (have yet to freeze the subpatch)

a good example of the quality im trying to reach would be the short movie Understanding Chaos-- which was on the newtek site at one point, I haven't been able to find it recently though.

so ya any help would be nice thanks

I think it looks good atm, just like you said render out your objects as sub patched and make sure smoothing is checked in your surface properties..

I assume you are going for a 2 or 3 tone look. try setting up a scene with lighting, background etc.. and you will see that the cel shading can be simple as.. it's the movement that brings it to life.

Manga use a lot of painted backgrounds, which contrast with the animated characters. I don't know what else to say. But if you're still having problems let me know and I'll see if I can help you figure them out.

Keep at it. :)

did it, it doesn't look terrible, it just doesn't look how i want it too. here is a link that shows a good example of what i want to be able to achieve http://www.studioartfx.com/index.html I know that he uses lightwave and all that, I'm not to sure if he uses BESM, super cel shader, or somethin else though-- but basically thats the quality im looking to attain-- it looks like actual anime. If you like anime you should check it out too its a pretty cool short clip thing.

anyways if anyone can help me thanks in advance ^_^

Not 100% sure, but he may have already switched to the unreal TOon shader.

I definately recommend it over BESM and Super Cel. You get more control, and controls, over the coloring and the inking. Check on flay
