hello everybody, i just posted an image at the new lighting challenge at cgtalk. there's also an excellent image by otacon, but it would be nice to see more LW posts over there. here is the link:

rendered in fprime with 3 bounce radiosity. unfortunately i lost this version of the scene when saving the file after setting it up for kray as a test. layout crashed and the LWS file size was 0 bytes :(
i will rebuild it later and try the same light setup with kray soon - stay tuned...

Awesome... excellent grape textures!

that looks good but the cherries are looking metallic or something. maybe they aren't diffuse or translucent enough. dunno

I think what the cherries need is more reflection blurring. The reflections of the banana look a lot sharper than the specular highlight, and quite frankly, it looks a bit off.
Other than that, terrific work. I love the texture on the dark grapes.

thanks for the great comments :) i'll try to work on the textures now - yes, the cherries seem to be much too reflective. agreed too for the 'banana issues' (LOL), that's a good observation ;)
will post more as soon as i have time...
Beautiful texturing, I love the bloom on the dark grapes and plums! How did you acheive that almost dusty appearance? - Baz

Thanks for the inspiration Markus, i gave it a go myself.
Been dabbling with LW for several years, finally got alot of free time, so plan to do alot of learning :)
Hopefully my image attaches here.

3dworks and Twisted_Pixel,
How did you guys get that file to open in Lightwave?
I thought I would mess around with this but everytime I try to open it, it says there was an error reading file.
BTW, your renders look great!

Should be fairly simple to open it.
Download the (5meg) file from http://www.3drender.com/challenges/
Extract using WinRAR or similar
Then File -> Load Obect -> Select OBJ file
Then resave in LWO format for working with.
Edit: - Thanks for the praise, but i have a long way to go yet. (Long-term beginner)

Well, I guess that settles it.
I was trying to open the rar file, I didn't know you had to
extract it. Boy do I feel like a dummy! :foreheads
It works now, thanks Twisted_Pixel.

twisted_pixel, a few tips for more realism: try to use less saturated colors for the fruits. as for the lighting, try to play two area lights. maybe set one on the side on the level of the fruits, and another one, less strong, slightly from over the camera on the other side - as a starter. use a null placed with the fruit as a target for an easy pointing of this area lights. you may add some fill lights later.
have fun :)

baz, i simply put a white procedural noise as the last layer onto it and set the blending mode to additive. thanks for the warm comments :)

Thanks for the tips Markus, have made a few changes based on what you said. it is better but still not complete.
Any more comments from yourself or others are gladly welcomed.

yes, looks already better, and here are a few more tips:
the key light seems not really to hit the fruits, only at the very upper part of the pear and of the grapes and the background. try to check if the lights are oriented correctly hitting the '5' key on the numeric keyboard after selecting a light. also, if you used area lights, try to make them bigger ('size') for getting softer shadows. usually, having one light as a key light with harder shadows and fill or rim lights with softer shadows works pretty well.
as for the textures and colors, obviously, try to look at real fruits and observe them to get the best realism :) maybe first try to play with the color, diffuse and specular values, then - if you reached a good balance - introduce some texturing.
one last advice, maybe try to position the plate in the lower half of the frame, that makes for a better composition - now the balancing is uncertain and the fruits plate a bit 'floating'.
hope it helps... keep the good work going on
cheers

Once again thanks for the comments, this will be my final version for now. Render time was much longer this time. Has been a good learning experience.
It's still not perfect, but it's the best render i've had of anything yet.
Had a look at your website Markus, very impressive images.
Am glad to get comments from such skilled person.
