Rendering to dv codec problem

I've been a Lightwave user for years. I've always rendered 32-bit still frames. This has given me the most flexibility with compositing in After Effects.

Yesterday I was asked to render a file in DV format.

I was embarassed that I couldn't get it to work. Under AVI output there was an option for DVSoft compression, I selected that and got the 'unable to stream' error. I was able to select a DV codec with Quicktime but the output looked terrible.

There's got to be a basic DV output, isn't there? Every editing packing in the world has this feature. What am I missing?

Someone here must render to DV format on XP....

I searched the net, read manuals and books. I'm not posting this because I'm lazy. And I don't think this is a stupid question. DV rendering just isn't working.

Probably not too many people are crazy enough to render directly to a lossy compression format, since they would then have to re-render just to experiment with compression settings. Rendering to stills is the best option, then create the DV stream from the stills with LW or an editor, or QT pro.
