We bought VT4.5, primarily as a production switcher. The DDR capabilities are great... except.
I have a very basic question. What can I do with the limited codecs VT can use? Uncompressed is great but how do we get these files into NLEs like Premiere or FCP? I would love to be able to use DVCPRO 50 or similar to save disk space and we are quickly running out of disk. Do I understand correctly that VT4.5 only does .rtv, .dv, or nt25?
We are ultimately going to broadcast the footage and do not want to downgrade to DV25. Any suggestions or solutions? Or is it already there, I am just missing it? Has anybody found a workflow they would recommend? etc... etc...
thanks in advance,
Tom

You can save/import uncompressed avi's. They are in the codec list as YUV. I'm not at the machine, but there are also many compressed codecs you should be able to use to go between platforms.

:agree:
If it's (a codec) installed on your box then it should work in VT. Of course this is not always the case but for most of what you've mentioned, you should be able to make use of most windows-based codecs.
I would suggest you give the new NewTek DV codec a shot as it is much more efficient in it's savings as well as being able to be used by any other app on the system. It is an avi, afterall.
From there, I would look at the avi wrapper as an alternative if you have rtvs that you don't want to downgrade.
:goodluck:

I'm in front of the system now and 'discovered' that there are many other formats and codecs available. EX: Quicktime. I was getting the impression from reading Newtek forums that VT uncompressed, NT25 and a few others were the only formats and codecs.
So basically, I can capture in anything available on the system, correct? Any ideas how I can get DVCPRO50 captures so I can import directly to FCP? Or possibly another 4:2:2 format which isnt so huge as uncompressed? Sorry if this is such a basic question.
thanks again,

Basic questions are a godsend to those of us that want to answer but have evening slow-brain.
Yes. What shows up is useable.
NT25 is 4:2:2, ya know?

nt25 & RTV are VT proprietary codec that won't work with FCP or any other nle unless you have VT installed in the same system or are useing a patch plug-in.
i've found that Huffyuv or DV type2 avi work well with fcp. Huffyuv is a 4:2:2 codec. both don't have to be converted to QT before importing into FCP. Huff will have to be rendered while DV type2 avi plays in real-time.
by the way does anyone know when NT will release nt25 codec for use on computers without VT installed?

How does rendering to the Apple DVCPRO selection work?
Under Apple/Quicktime in Render options.

Jport,
I do believe that's incorrect as I use it on my laptop with DFX and Mirage. To that end, it is the first codect that DOESN'T require the VT to be inside.
And, just to be clear, if you gather all the proper dlls, rtv will work on a box without VT, as well.
TriCaster had an installer for the NT25 codec that could be used for installation on standalone boxes. Mayhaps that's been/being provided through a download. If not, ask for it from Paul.

my bad UnCommonGrafx,
my experience with RTVs was when i tried moving RTV .dlls from my VT system to a non VT system, but i couldn't get my ppro to read .rtv files also my vegas which is on the same VT system can't load .rtv.
So i'm assuming that unless someone writes a plug-in for a certain app like AE, DF, Combustion then .rtv is limited to those programs and not a universal codec.
maybe i messed up in the install. can you clarify where .rtv .dlls should be loaded and what files they are? thanks
as for nt25 can someone tell me where to find the installer app or which system folders i can pull the .dlls from to install on another system? Tri-caster & Toaster download sites don't have nt25 installer app available. and i haven't heard an update on the AE & nt25 problem being fixed. i've contacted customer and tech support on this and they haven't responded.
did i miss something, will these codecs work on an Mac now?

No problem!
I'm running late and won't be around a net connection until this afternoon. If no one shows up with the answer, I'll find it for ya.
On the NT25 codec, find a fle that says "NewTek_Codec.dll". That should be it.

I wasn't aware of any simple way for a VT[4] 4.5 user to install the NT25 codec on other machines, since there's no separate installer included.
Robert, if it's just that one dll, can you elaborate on where it is and where it needs to be put and such? Doesn't it have to get "registered" into the OS to work?

Well...
I had a TriCaster around for a while and it came with that... I still have the install from that, though. I am unsure as to the registration because I remember the instru....
Nevermind.
Ok, I found the dll in my c:\w2k\system32 dir and the inf file in the C:\W2K\inf directory.
Hope that helps. Paul has posted the files needed for rtv use on a non-VT machine. I'm too grumpy tonight to care. :( I'll silently search for it and share what I find.

No... I didn't. I assumed anything "25" would be DV and 4:1:1. Doesn't that mean 25Mbps?
Otherwise, that gives me a codec comparable to say DVCPRO50? If so, then if I can install NT25 on my Mac and get FCP to understand it, things are looking better.

I was hoping I could find this post from Paul you've spoken of Robert, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. (I've even searched the 100's of posts from Paul alone!)
if you have any insight to this I would really appreciate it.
thanks,
bruce

BTW, if you do a Google search you'll find that there is a commercially available DVCPro 50 codec out there. I have installed the demo version but haven't tried to use it yet so I don't know how well it'll work with the VT in terms of being able to capture.

I recall reading a thread a few months ago were somebody was succesfully using the NT25 codec with Premier. This was before VT4.5 when the codec was only on the Tricaster

thanks guys, after much time in conversion I've been able to get the NT25 codec to work in premier (I think I also posted this on safe harbor's list). Except that the image is inverted. I've been trying to find a way to get this from happening but so far no go.
thanks for the info. Anything on this problem would be a great help as well.
thanks,
bruce

Currently NT25 is only for Windows
This was posted almost 3 years ago, is there now an NT25 codec available for Macs? And can someone give me a link to the newtek download page, I can't seem to find it anywhere!

Can anyone tell us what the best render/capture from VT5 to a MAC codec? I have some raw footage that needs to go from my beta deck to a prodction house only using mac's FCP. What is the codec to use for capture? I want it to be as lossless as possible from start to finish.

FCP/MACs work nativly with Quicktime. So pick the least compressed Quicktime format on the VT5 for what you are working on.
