Model A Starship Tutorial Help

I'm going through Dwayne ferguson's Tutorial and I'm in the section of Model A Starship Pt 1. I follow the instructions and create the box and then add depth in the other window but when I go to the top right window to create the box, the crosshair tool will not change allowing me to attatch to the two dimentional box to in order to create the three dimentional box.

The crosshair tool should change to the diamond shape tool allowing me to pull the box out to form the three dimentional box but it does not. What do I need to do?

I don't know about the diamond shaped tool, but with the box tool on, I just click above or below the 2d box in the window that is viewed as flat and it becomes unflat. make sure you haven't hit enter or something till your box is made.
