i am a novice, need help with 1 thing!

I have "outlined" a word in illustrator and have imported it into modeler. My problem is that any letter that is closed off, e.g. O R Q A B D P, and when I extrude those letters, the hole disappears and the letters become solid. I'm not sure how to select that centre part and delete or what?
Anyone who could help me with this would really make my day!

when you use the eps loader check auto axis drill.
also ...i always convert type to paths before exporting from illustrator.
