After I've lost my previous Ferrari (harddrive failure), I've decided to restart the entire project from scratch. You can view the original thread here (http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=40335), but I am hoping that this thread will be more exiting due to the experience I've attained during the building of the first model.
So here we go, not much at this stage, and no, it's not a parrots beak!

Made a bit of progress here. I am modelling this model in four basic parts, The nosecone, cockpit, chassis, engine cover and colar (the bit around the drivers head/neck)...just like the actual car is broken up.
I'm really pushing to finish this model as soon as I can. I know the anatomy of the F2005 Ferrari fairly well by now. I'll be having two days off after tomorrow, so I expect to put in at least 16 hours of work on this model then, hopefully even more.
Constructive criticism, praise and money welcome!

might have been a blessing in disguise mate .. I can see the extra detail going into the sidepods and nose .. well actually the whole bloody thing .. I had better get working in the McLaren garage today then aye?
Good to see you have learnt from your previous model ..

The old model looks very good but I bet this one looks even better!
Keep posting

It's now the 3rd day and I'm actually doing some work on the model again, I've not put in nearly the time I wanted to since the last post. I've been busy now for an additional 6 hours or so (in between watching the tube).
Basically, I've modelled the rear a bit more, added parts of the diffuser, and refined the ridge behind the top air intake. Lastly I added panel separations between the nose and cockpit, the cockpit and engine cover, chassis and colar (the bit that protects the driver in the cockpit). Excuse my technical terms.

Just a quick update, I've added the front wing, and will finish this part tomorrow. For now, time for me to hit the sack, it's 2am here in the UK, and my eyelids are weighing a ton.

I've basically spent about an hour on refining the front wing.
Basically I've defined the jagged edge of the 3rd wing, added the front bit where the jack/hoist normaly goes during changing of tyres. I've also added the supports on the nose (not seen here) as well as some fittings on the 2nd and 3rd wings.
Still to be done on this part is the tweaking of the vertical winglets, but thisshouldn't take too long. All I need to do is bulge the rear bit outward, and create a slight inward angle, in particularly to the rear of these horizontal winglets.
I know watching this might be a bit boring, but I'm sure things will look more interesting the moment I throw in some rendering.
I am trying to push this model to completion as fast as I can, so I leave rendering and so forth to the end, or maybe at least till I start texturing.
Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for more updates!!! Feel free to throw in a rating or so, but before you do, do take a look at my lost thread to get the idea of where this is heading! :D

Even from these wips, this is beginning to look awsome.
Keep up the fine work Josamoto.

Let me now, an image post,
on forum such a funky host.
Labour spent on zippy mesh,
Skin peels of my fingers flesh.
Hope you like, effort of mine,
soon it will be rendertime.
...
Making progress, slowly but steadily. I've added the "shark gills", chimneys and the side wings immediately in front of the rear wheels. I've also started with the main rear wing.
Soon it will be rendertime!

Just a minor update. I've added the horizontal rear wing section, plus the secondary rear wing between the wheels. I've also added very basic barge boards, these need to be curved more and detail added.
I'm expecting to do a lot of progress tomorrow night, and I'm planning on a basic rendering setup to start doing some basic test renders on the model.

It's been a couple of days since my last post, but here's an update. The barge boards have been finished, as well as the rear wing and diffuser.
I need to put in more time on this model, and backup's are happening like clockwork!
I'm not too pleased with the amount of progress I have made in the past few days, but here we go.

I thought the same thing when I looked at our number of views we had!!! What a coincidence hey!
I think others are watching but they don't really find Formula 1 cars exciting. They might be thinking: "Mmmm, nice car, but there's no seat for my girlfriend!!!"
I mean, if you look at the threads on guys modelling for example a Star Wars space ship, they're simply getting more attention since more people dig Star Wars more than the F1 GP.
O, well, well just keep on modelling. It's been a lot of fun seeing you progress and it has driven me to work a lot harder on my Ferrari.
About your rendering, do test renders at say 320x240, and once you are happy, crank the resolution up, and maybe try rendering regions if you can, leaving your machine to run, rendering overnight.
I think you are seriously in need of an upgrade, its really impairing your creative abilities. Spend a few bucks and get a proper machine, or maby consider a RAM upgrade!
Yea totally agree there Dude,
Has been a bit of fun, cheers ..
I did notice when I first posted an F1 car and a couple of evos on here I got heckled and nothing constructive from anyone [from memory] so I moved to simpylightwave .. hmm, I do have a millenium falcon on disc somewhere ..
But hey your model should be getting ALOT more accolades because if the detail etc .. its not easy building an F1 car, I know
Oh and regarding an upgrade .. I work on a Mac these days as Im a Flash developer and I dont see a reason to buy another PC just for 3D [hobby] but its times like these [today] where Id love a new AMD, 3Gb ram PC with just lightwave!! installed, but alas Flash is my game and until I can afford or Im making money from 3d Im gonna have to stay with my old [2 years] gruntless PC  for 3D, or if I could source a copy of LW for mac, although I learnt LW on a mac and they do also struggle with rendering ..
Oh yes I'll try that render suggestion next week sometime.
Cheers Mate, I'll be checking for updates ..

Hi all.
Today I added some wheels. I've created the rims, brake disc with caliper, wheel nuts and tyre, as well as the brake ducts (not seen here).
I'll recycle these for the rear, but the rear wheels are not exactly the same size. I'll be tweaking the shape and size to fit, and the wheel nut/axle also lies deeper/closer to the car on the rear wheels.
Still short of an air valve on the wheel setup. Suspension will follow on this.

Looking good man,
Nice detail, I started modeling new rims and tyres last night to but buggered up the symmetry, so I'll have to start again .. I used to have a real good image of the rims and tyres from an F1 car but alas cant find it anymore ...
Geez that tyre came out good although low poly ..!
Cheers,

Work on the front suspension has begun, and I will hopefully finish this tomorrow, and get starting on the rear suspension.

The title says it all. All thats left now is a coupe of tweaks here and there. I'll have to take a look at the back of the car, where the back slopes down, definitely something wrong there.
I also have to a some holes for the front suspension struts. Then I'll only be left with the steering wheel and driver seat, and not to mention the pitot and radio antenae on the nose.
I'll probably spot a few other things as I go along.
This rendering took 2m 60s, hope you like it. Crits welcome!

I've almost finished the steering wheel, and will be moving on to the driver seat and harnass next. I also added to top air intake camera with wings and a few other bits and pieces. Then we only need a set of mirrors and the modelling process will be complete.
Thank you all for watching, stay tuned for more.

That is one sick model. like seeing your progress go from whoa to whooooa!!!! how many polys is it up to?
Josamoto
11-17-2005, 06:41 PM
Thanks Gettarobox!!! I've got 544102 with this render I'm, posting now. All that's left now is to tweak here and there and then it's over to texturing.
This is just a minor update, not a lot of work done today. I basically changed the front wing to represent this years model, as well as the base plate was made a bit thinner. I also tweaked the shape on the nose a bit, added the driver seat, steering wheel and mirrors (not done though).
Can't wait to finally round of the modelling process.

Just a quick update on the modelling process. A couple of changes have been made. But I feel that the modelling phase is basically finished. If you spot anything out of place, please feel free to say so! I probably will be making more changes here and there as I proceed with the texturing.
Thanks for watching you all!

Finally, some color on the subject. I've added some logos to the nosecone and front wing, I am using a fake fresnel effect on the reflections, and an HDRI image with backdrop radiosity to render the scene!
I hope you guys like it! Throw in what you think! Pleeeeze!!!

Nice! Once you splashed on those team colours, I could almost hear that Ferrari engine starting up. Can't wait to see it with the texturing and cockpit finished. Keep it up!

I could almost hear that Ferrari engine starting up.
Yeah Pugs, if only us humble human beings could have the previlege to sit in one of these cars, hey! To think of it, even to take a Jordan or Minardi around the track will be a decent thrill!
Anycase, most of the sponsor logo's are done now, just a few more to go, then it's time to tackle the tyres, rims and other bits and pieces.
I am now pretty much where I was when I lost my model the last time. Man, it feels good knowing you have a backup of all your hard labour.
I think I'll need a nice cold beer after this one. I am never modelling a Ferrari again, NEVER!!! If I see another Ferrari, I am going to be very, very ill.
My apologies for the boring angle, I'll be posting more different angles as thing close in on the final stage. You guys must be getting tired of me.
Render time for this image: 6m 43s

We can only wish. It's a privlige for the few. One of my old buddies from my bicycle-courier days raced Formula V and Formula Ford on the weekends and he was quite good, but even he said it was a pretty slim chance that he'd ever have an F-1 ride or a Indy ride.
My apologies for the boring angle, I'll be posting more different angles as thing close in on the final stage. You guys must be getting tired of me.
Nothing wrong with the classic 3/4 view. It's like a good seat at the starting grid. (next best thing to a paddock pass). You're probably the one getting tired.

The model is progressing slowly, tyres have been updated. I am still to tackle the suspension, steering, seat, exhaust, tcam and a few other bits and pieces.

I've been busy updating the wheels a bit. I'm not utterly happy with the look on the rubber, but it will have to do for now.

Hi everyone!
This could be the final image, I strongly feel I should be moving on to the next project in my short human lifespan. I've been working hard on this model, it's my first 3D project ever completed in the history of me, and I'm getting a bit bored with this Ferrari now. I think my brain has been overexposed to images of this car, it's pretty much like listening a song over and over again.
I won't stop supporting Ferrari in the next F1 season though!!! You can forget that. I hope you have all enjoyed my thread, and thanks so much to those who have given me their input and advice! It really helped me along very well. I owe you guys one!

Very Nice.
I am sure you will revisit this as you get even better.
I'm sure you have already but please save it in different locations.
Look forward to posts of your next project.

Terrific piece of modelling you've done there! Take a well earned break (from Ferrari modelling, at least). Good job.
