Julienne ?

Im having problems with julienne.
My first problem is that the book is so vague about it that it really doesnt say how to use it.
Im trying to use it to split a lightning bolt shaped object and Im not sure how to do it.
Ive tried the different axis but cant get it right, sometimes all it does is send me to my layer 15 in layout wich has nothing on it.
can u explain it to me?
does it only work with a background layer?
Can the object be flat?

Yeah, Julienne is really broke. I'm not sure when it broke, or if this is Mac only thing (I'm using Mac 7.5c). I noticed another reference to this problem in the Mac Bug Workshop.

Basically Julienne will work if you use it on a perfectly square cube centered at 0,0,0. Use a different shape, or move it from center and weirdness kicks in. Even when it properly "julienne's", it leaves temp geometry on other layers.

Please Newtek, fix these modeler bugs, they are a royal pain.
