I am using LW 8.3 and I have been noticing that when I save a scene, it does not save the .lws extension. When I go to load recent scenes, it is listed and will load, but I have tried to load older scenes that were saved without the extension and they are not recognized. Now I have to go in to hundreds of saved older scenes and rename them with the .lws extension. Shouldn't that be the default save extension for the scenes? If not, how can I be sure that it will be saved with the .lws extension without having to type it for each new file?
I have tried to edit the .cfg file by adding the 'FileType scenes *.lws' but it doesn't work. Something is deleting it from the config file. I change it, create scene, save and go back to config and the line I added has been deleted. This isn't working too well, ugh.

I don't have any data to help you. But I can varify that I have run into the same thing. Quite some time ago actually back when I had 4.0-5.6.
Not sure exactly when it started (I know that it wasn't in 3.5 on the Amiga). I just got used to typing .lws or (.scn as it once was).

When you go to save the scene, make sure the "Save as type:" drop down menu says "Scenes" and not "All Files". Try that and see how it goes.

I guess I'll have to start making sure I use the extension .lws in all my saving. It's kind of a pain, especially since it's not supposed to work that way.
When I save it does say Scene Files and not All Files, but if I don't put the extension on their, it just saves it as a 'file'

Oh ok, it's been doing it to me too, I just took a stab at what I thought it might be. The plot thickens :help:

Ok, I've done some experimenting. My LW8.cfg file was present in two places. One was in Docs & Settings/All Users, and the other was in Docs & Settings/Willax. The one in all users contained the correct line in the .cfg for files. The one in Willax did not. I deleted the Willax and copied the All users into the willax folder. Checked the line and it was there. Started up LW, loaded object, saved scene. It was saved as a 'file' not a scene. Went back into Willax .cfg file and the line was now missing. So something is deleting that line in the configuration when the program is starting up.

Willaz,
I tried on my macjhine and all seems well - both for scenes and objects!!
One thing you might check is that your Filetypes are set properly. This is found in your Folder Options in Windows. you should have a filetype for both .LWS and .LWO in the list. If not, create one for each and make sure that the extensions point to the Layout and Modeler programs respectively. This may be your problem. It seems that repeated installs, updates, and uninstalls can goof up this filetytpes list.
Hope this helps.

James, neither one was listed in file types extension in folder options. However, even though I was able to add them to the list, I was not able to select program to open them with. When I select program, it just sends me back to selection screen. It seems there is no way to add programs to Microsoft's default list.

The save scene funtion is actually a plugin is it not? Have you tried to just delete the plugin then reload it?
Not soure how you would delete it but you could recan plugins and use the one it loads. First just delete it's assignment to the layout then if it does not automatically assign it then assign it and see if it works. At this point there would be two right? So you could just try each one til it works.
Something to try anyway.
If that does not work unistalling reinstalling might fix it.

Well, it's not that I'm having a problem saving the scene. It saves just fine. The problem is the extension. That is not an option in the plugin add/delete window.

What do you mean? Oh yo mean in the configure menus? No what I mean is if the plugin is not working properly that might be why it is not saving with the extention. So replace it or reinstall. Other than replacing the save scene plugin and showing you were it was it has nothing to do with that screen in so far as anything else goes.
I was assuming that since you were poking arouind in config files you were familiar with the configure menus window. So sorry for being too brief. If you mean sonmething else then let me know, but that's how I take what you meant.
I mean there are only three options. The plug in, lightwave configs or windows. right? I was only saying try replacing the save scene plugin or reinstall LW wich would handle two of the three possibilities.

I have had this problem in the past myself. Not really sure what causes it. I did notice that some of the lines in the config file was not correct. In that some lines ended a file location with the / character while other did not.
The only thing I could suggest at the moment to to delete your config files and start from scratch. That is rescan all your plug ins, set the content directory, and reset the menus to default.
BTW, did you know it was highly suggested by NT to do the above when upgrading to 8.3?
