View Full Version : Anyone know of a plugin that can do this . . .

I have a cross section through a train carriage roof imported into LW.

In order to extrude the profiles I obviously need to select the points in order to make a flat polygon for extruding.

It's a tedious process.

The annoying thing is that most of the profiles form perfect loops (no breaks) but 'Select Connected' doesn't pick them in any clockwise/anti-clockwise order so I can't make a poly out of them.

Does anyone know of a plugin that can 'follow' the points as they are connected in order?

Hi Matt,
it's me again :)
I don't know of a plugin that does that, but here is a trick that might work:
go to layer 2, create a plane that encompasses your template.
shift-R (Template Drill)
Select your axis, and off you go.

This works in most cases, and will create the polygons you need.

ahhhh, of course! never thought of that!

although just tried it and it's locked LW!

Split up your template, and may be the plane as well.
LW6.x + has introduced a point limit of 1024 per polygon, so with complex models, this might be the culprit.

Try extruding your template, and then do a boolean with the plane.

guess what!

I just did that! and it works!

:)

still a plugin that did select in order would be very useful.

kind of like select_loop but for points!

There's a "Select Loop" in this plug-in pack...

I already have those Lamont, the select loop only works with quads, the loop I'm trying to select are made up of 2 point polys (that form a loop) basically 2D profiles.

Matt,
Another easy way I can think of (despite the ones mentioned above)would be to extrude it, so you get a lot of nice quads going round your profile. Now use bandsaw on them. It will cut it and select the new points in an order (switch to point- selection- mode). Now hit p to create a polygon.

once upon a time there was a thing called sel_point_chain which works like 3DD PointRailSelector, only that it selects it in order. but i cant locate anywhere now.
