Anyone have a tutorial for modeling a sword? I was attempting it using the PDF made by Rob Pauza, however, he gives a very broad tutorial that isn't enough for us beginners. When I try it, and right now I'm just doing the blade portion, I'm getting a lot of shading errors. And doing the select polys and cut/paste idea is giving the sword hard machined edges in the wrong places)

i could be wrong, and i never have seen this tutorial, but it sounds like you have unwelded points. try the merge points command (m). of course you can also select points one by one and if you get two points when it should be only one weld it.

that sounds confusing.... hope i didnt stear you wrong.:(

If you can find a copy, the "LightWave 5.6 Applied" book by Dave Jerrard has a tut on modeling a sword.

Yea the tut in LW 5.6 Applied (although pretty old) is really nice.
Maybe you can find a cheap copy...
don't know a good sword tut on the web either, but that doesn't mean is none :)

The 5.6 Applied sword tutorial is in a book, not a PDF as far as I am aware.

Whoops! ;)

As for a blade, the trick is in the way you taper it.
Get all but one of the segments reasonably tightly packed at one end of a box, taper these with Ease Out (I think) to get the nice curve to the point.
Merge the end points and remove any 1-point or 2-point polys.

I've thrown this multi-layered object together for folks to look at. Each layer has some text in it to give a brief outline.

Heh, there really ain't any good tutorial for making a sword.

Attached pic of my own sword ... Model is quite finnished but this is first test render.

If you like it and you want some advises post your questions here.

I did a model of a sword a while back also. :D Here's Mine. (http://www.nsdigitalinc.com/melvil/images/mastersword_progress_10_c.jpg)

The blade on mine has a slightly different design, but the way I did it should work in many other cases.

I simply drew out the outline of the blade and using a couple of bevels and point-pushing got the desired shape with minimal effort.
