Hi all, Im going to build a new machine based on the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 2Mb of ram, was wondering what everyone thinks about putting 2 Geforce 7800 GTX's in SLI configuration into the system.(system will be used for gaming also. but mainly LW8.)

thanks, Christian

Bump up your ram first :D

Surrealist.

Yea More ram but remember, not only gaming but you also have to play those anims back :) A better graphics card is going to help. Not only that but LW9 will be making use of it.

If you start using large amounts of ram be sure and start using ecc or registered memory. Some say not to bother but read up on ram and you will see that errors in 4 gigs worth of memory starts to add up! Make sure you get a motherboard that supports this type of memory.
Memory in an OS like wink2K or WinXp in 32bit only supports up to 2gig any more and its is "un-used". If you run WinXp 64bit then you can efficiently use all the memory your motherboard will support.

Have fun!

I guess prospector was refering to the "2Mb" which i hope should have been 2GB, because even my 486 had more RAM :p

About registered memory: You'll have to buy an Opteron then, because the memory controller is inside the CPU and the Athlon64 does not support registered RAM. You can use unbuffered ECC memory though, but to be able to use ECC make sure the BIOS supports it.

you also have to play those anims back A better graphics card is going to help.
Whatever you mean by that...in case you mean MPEG video and the like, then yes and no. I don't think SLI will help there, MPEG4 isn't accelerated either from what i know, only MPEG1/2 and WMV9.
If you meant preview in LW, then that's to be proved if LW8.5/9 finally makes some worthy use of the GPU at all, let alone SLI.
