Testing for an upcoming animation. I don't have time to build a brain - luckily I've had this Zygote one from a project a few years ago. Trying new texturing and lighting.
the colour and 'wetness' of the brain is looking good, my only comment would be the veins.
they look more like hair that has stuck to the wet surface!
unless that's what they're meant to be, in which case well done!!!

I experimented with a procedural. I guess I always knew I'd have to paint them, but I had to give the cheat a chance first.

Nice model, Zarathustra!
The only comments I have are the veins and shininess.
IMO, the veins look too dark. Maybe if you made them lighter or more faded into the brain, that would be good.
And, although I know you are going for the "wet" look, it looks a little too shiny, like plastic.
But that's basically about it. Otherwise, nice job! :D dark

Uhm.. that looks nothing at all like Brain. Even Pinky wouldn't be fooled. First, where's the hair? And the protruberant forehead? And the sinister attitude?
(ducks and runs very far away.)
It looks realistic enough to fool me, but then I haven't gone around looking at intact brains lately....

I'd recommend toning the veins down a bit. Also, the hypothalamus and brain stem should have a different color and texture. Maybe something a little less glossy, to offset the "wetness" of the brain.
Also, the brain seems a little too pink to me. It might be nice to add a larger scale procedural texture for the base color, instead of just a flat pink. Maybe a pink to grayish-pink gradient, keyed to a TurbNoise procedural.

I came across this brain modeling and surfacing tutorial awhile back. I've never actually tried the tutorial however it does look like it may be usefull.

Hope this helps.
BTW It looks like your off to a great start.
