I guess I'm just old. I just don't think Smilies or Icons really do much to promote a professional image - even if it's not a serious topic.

Looking at these Icons all around makes me think I'm on some kids site.

Just me I suppose.

Paul

Perhaps I should just say :tsktsk:

This is actually great, it helps show the mood of the poster.
I would like to recommend that you also add the head banging a wall.

Agreed. The static icons were plenty imo. Makes me feel like I am on a gaming forum with 14 year olds.

But... just my opinion also...

Well, what impression would you get if you went to the forums and was looking around trying to decide if LW was for you? Would you think it looks really good and you want to use on your next motion picture, or would the smilies make you think it was some wannabe software only appealing to teenagers? (OK, it's a bit simplistic)

Webmaster or not, I guess the choice to adopt smilies should reflect what Newtek wants to project as a reflection of it's professionalism and culture, rather than purely your own view.

Any chance of fixing the download of videos for siggraph 2004? I can download up to zoic studios, but I can't download any after that..

Judging a piece of software by the use of smilies on it's forum would be pretty :censored: stupid.

Agreed-

I personally rarely smilies for my own use but I do find it interesting when other people use them. Decapitated smilies should add some new theatrics to the forums.

I see naive went to stupid..

In business you do all the things you can to make product sell and avoid all the things that make it less likely to sell. If I were trying to get lightwave in the door and sold it to my boss saying it's got great support forums, etc. lets go and buy it. I'd be embarassed to show forums full of oddball smileys associated with what is supposed to be a professional product. It wouldn't give a good impression. People buy into things for the oddest of reasons and they also walk away for equally trivial reasons.

Anyway, the odd smiley doesn't bother me - having a raft of them pushed in my face when typing or reading posts does. As I said I'm probably getting old because they just look juvenile.

Yeah, this described what I was thinking better than what I originally typed. And just so I'm clear, I'm not inferring anything about you.

I remember going to the Vatican website years ago, and they had a cute little animated puppy gif under a sculpture by Michelangelo. If it's good enough for him, doesn't bother me.

L33T = elite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L33t

Why one would have an l33t emoticon is beyond me, but why one would want to type in and decipher l33t is beyond me also... Kids nowadays...

This is my favorite part from the above link:

Spellings do not always follow a set convention, the same word may be spelled differently by different people, indeed by the same person. This is symptomatic of the desire, or affected desire or desire for an appearance of either a desire or affected desire, to elude comprehension by others unfamiliar with the art form.

From Urban Dictionary:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=l33t

1. l33t :l33t:
Hacker slang for "Elite" shortened to "LEET" from "31337" wich is actually "ELITE".

I think the term professional is all relative. I'm not a kid. On the contrary, I have a married daughter, a son in the 11th grade, another daughter in 7th. I am a mechanical designer using SolidWorks and CADKEY to design our automated machinery. I occassionally use Lightwave to illustrate upcoming machinery for clients. I have many times been complimented, by coworkers, clients, and personal associates as a highly professional person. I'm not trying to toot my own horn but feel it's necessary to make my point. Having said all that, I absolutely love the smilies/emoticons.

I think that it's great that Newtek updated the forum to allow its users to express themselves. Will it be abused? By some ,for sure, but I think it will be the minority. I think emoticons are very useful to convey that someone is kidding and the comment shouldn't be taken serious. Many arguments have started for such simple things. Overall, I'm all for a little fun to break up the monotony.

mo·not·o·ny ( P ) Pronunciation Key (m-ntn-)
n. pl. mo·not·o·nies
1. Uniformity or lack of variation in pitch, intonation, or inflection.
2. Tedious sameness or repetitiousness: the monotony of daily routine.

ju·ve·nile ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jv-nl, -nl)
adj.
Not fully grown or developed; young.
Of, relating to, characteristic of, intended for, or appropriate for children or young people: juvenile fashions.
Marked by immaturity; childish: juvenile behavior.

LOL! ;-) (no smileys required)

Juvenile? I don't see how that applies. If someone decides to use a smiley, that's being juvenile? You yourself used one in your last comment " ;-) " whether it's typed or in graphical form its really the same thing isn't it? ;) See the wink, it means I'm just giving you a hard time and nothing personal. I could have taken your last comment as being a personal insult to me but I saw the wink after the comment, phew, we just avoided a nuclear meltdown here. :)

I will agree some smilies may be inappropriate for my tastes so I will just avoid using them however, there are people here from many walks of life and we have to respect that. These boards can't cater just to the "Professional" it has to be diverse. Newtek is supposed to be a technological company. How would it look if they had a forum that wasn't up to the lastest advances or trends. The redesigned forum represents that they are conscientious of this. You have an interesting view point Pauland. I just don't agree. Oh well, to each his own, I'm done. *puts soap box back in closet*

in·sult ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-slt)
v. in·sult·ed, in·sult·ing, in·sults
v. tr.

1. To treat with gross insensitivity, insolence, or contemptuous rudeness.

pauland
07-13-2005, 04:46 PM
Handron, no insult was intended. Juvenile is my opinion of the "Smilies" craze not a personal reflection on you. I suspect that many people will look back in times to come and wince that they ever used them.

Anyway, we can have different views and I'm definitely in the minority!

I don't find ;-) to be the same as :) simply because I'm not a fan of the cartoon faces. No matter.

I suspect that many people will look back in times to come and wince that they ever used them.

Isn't that the truth! Like so many other things our past harbors many funny moments of ignorance or what we thought was trend setting. :O)

Disclaimer: No smilies were harmed or used in the creation of this post out of respect to those of an anti-smiley disposition.

Actually I think that the basic ones serve a valuable purpose... I used to run a bulletin board in the days before the web, and loads of people managed to cause serious unintended offence with dry humour or irony, which almost inevitably came across as bitter sarcasm.

Add a smiley and the intention of a joke is clear.

Similarly with an idiot at work now, who just seems incapable of understanding that with the loss of tone, his attempts at humour don't work.

You've just escalated the scale of naffness in the smiley world. I think I'm going to be ill... ;-)

Thank you! (I think...)

I actually have a pageful on my web site:

But I must be very, very careful. If anyone discovers I did them using 'Poser', I will have to commit suicide.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand a critical and judgemental eye toward the use of any graphical communications including smileys. :gotpics:

Smileys are just one tiny step towards the inevitable and eventual migration to fully multimedia communications. At some point everyone will be able to incorporate their pictures, audio, visuals etc. into their messages and other day-to-day communications. It just so happens that bandwidth limitations restrict most common uses to standard mini visuals such as smilies. To think that they are some how beneath a company or that some day everyone will regret ever having used them is just silly. Of course, as has always been the case, the message is in the content and not the tools for delivery. There will always be some messages that do not present their case well, or present the sender in a less than positive light. As demonstrated earlier in this topic, letters can do that just as easily as symbols. My advice: If you don't like :neener: then don't use
