Why is there no free demo for Lightwave? I want to be able to see if this is the modeling program for me....before I spend this much money.

Anybody? Also, plugins appear to be less expensive for lightwave than for "other" modelers; how extensive are the plugins for lightwave? Incidentally I am the main artist for a small Indie video game company.

There is a free demo version. Call Sales at 800-847-6111, and tell them you would like a demo version of LightWave. The disc and the shipping are free. We are also working on an all new downloadable demo version, which will be available later this year.
If you are outside North America, you will need to contact Sales for your area.

Ok Kurtis, thanks. I'll call right now. We're using Gamespace right now, but I am shopping around for a solid piece of software that won't cost me my first born.

I believe you can also download Lightwave 7.5 off of the downloads page and it will function like the discovery edition:

Looks like it's just all updates on that page, hrgiger. Thanks anyways. I've contacted New Tek as Kurtis suggested, and they are sending me the demo on CD right now. Thanks for the help so far.

Yes, but if you download the 7.5 update, it will function by itself without having 7 installed.

But surely you need to have registered to be able to download the 7.5 update? or am i mistaken?
Sorry, i'm mistaken... just tried it out and it downloads without entering my details, never knew that.

I like to speculate
Newtek are holding off the downloadable release of the demo until after Siggraph ...because a demo with true edges (wouldn't that be nice), ngons and more loveley improvements ...with specially created tutorials etc to go with it ...will make much more of an impression than releasing a demo now for download.
I am getting excited with what Newtek are going to show at Siggraph.
Nice to have these new smileys too :jam:

I know... with these new smilies  , it feels like chrimbo!! :santa: Ooh, any excuse to use the new ones!
As for Siggraph, i reckon it'll be alot of Inspire along with the latest improvements in Lightwave being in it too. Hopefully Inspire won't be a basic port of Lightwave, it could be integrated into a tighter app and maybe spell the future of Lightwave. You never know. Im getting a bit too excited now!

People sure are going into Siggraph time with some elevated expectations. That is the quickest road to dissapointmentville that I know of.
I'm approcahing it like most comic book movies. I go into it thinking it's probably going to suck big time and that way, if it is good, it's better than I expected and if it does actually suck, then I've lost nothing except two hours of my life. I'll write it off as a nap.
Yeah, a lot of people don't know about the 7.5 download that is able to function on it's own. Matt Clary had it as a link in his signature as a while to let people know there was a downloadable demo (of sorts) available.

Hrgiger, I downloaded the 7.5 update, but it won't finish installing because it can't find a lightwave folder. Doesn't matter though, NewTek called, informing me the demo should be here in a few days. Thanks all.

Siggraph (http://www.siggraph.org/s2005/) is an annual conference focusing on computer graphics and interactivity. This is the event for companies to show off cutting edge technology and technique. NewTek and other CG app companies often use Siggraph and other venues (NAB, E3, etc.) as a vehicle to offer special deals to coincide with the event.
