This is my first attempt at mixing 2D with 3D, The bird is a real photo but the fire is 3D but some thing dosen't look right and I can put my finger on it??
Tell me what you think

First: the fire should be at the same resolution as the bird. It should be pixilated too.

Then, the flames cast no light on the bird, which they should do.

I think the fact that birds dont really blow up could be your first problem? :)

Play with the HV settings, dont use default Presets!...

I'll tell you what the problem is ( at least in my opinion ) :
you need fewer but bigger flames... I mean a bird can't be the size of a plane and in your picture it looks as if the camera was at least 300 m far from the bird/fire , implying that the explosion is huge . Try placing a plane instead of the bird and you'll see that it won't look odd anymore :) Hope I could be of any help .....
