I just recently got LW 8.0 when Newtek was having its crossgrade special for those who owned other 3D software(edu Maya 6.5). Still can't believe I was able to get a commerical version of a leading CG software for $500. Now I look around and see all these discounts on other software for users of LW. Maxon is having a special where you pay $900-$1000 on a full commerical version of their Cinema 4D XL 9.1 which is like a $1000 savings. Next Luxology has Modo 102 for $300 for LW users. Is there a reason for all of this cause I don't understand why LW users are getting all the love. Is this some marketing gimmick or something?

As already mentioned in the cgtalk thread, crossgrade offers are nothing unusual. You can probably get a discount on any of the top 3d apps for owning any of the other. Modo (by Luxology) and Mirage (by Bauhaus Software) are however special cases, both have/had close ties with NewTek. Modo's developer Luxology consist of a large part of the former Lightwave dev team, and Mirage was formelly known as Aura and developed by NewTek.

Yup...good ol Lightwave. I wanted to get it back in the days when it was $2500.00. I was messing around with Carrara and it sucked when it comes to character animation though it has a very interesting real time colision for hard bodies. . Few years later ..."Yippeeee!"...You know what I mean by that, dontcha? Well, I got a deal from Newtek. :)

The amazingingly great student discount on Lightwave means I'll actually be able to afford it. Great, huh? :)
(I'm just borrowing it right now; the owner is in Japan indefinitely...)

Although I have used every version of lw professionaly I only had the Amiga versions as personal property. Then NewTek did an amazing deal that allowed any version to upgrade to 6.5 for the cost of a normal upgrade.
Brilliant!
I jumped from version 4 to 6.5!
Now I am using LW8.3 and although there are parts that can and will be improved I am still extremley happy with NewTek.

Something like that, yes. That's pretty good, in my opinion.
Get them (LW users) while you can - That's what the other companies are thinking as LW maybe in for some improvements that will make it much harder for other vendors to convince LW folk that they need yet anther package so might as well woo them while you can. Maybe who really knows?
One school of thought as well would be that the improvements in LW will such that anyone who just bought in will want to upgrade to get the all new and improved features.... It’s not so much the game of how many new copies of the software you can sell but how do you keep your base, have them benefit from every upgrade cycle and expand your base.
I have been very happy that the upgrade Cycle, because I am only paying for an upgrade every year or so while I get a free ( point ) upgrades every four or five months!
So many deals out there but I am just fine with LW at the moment as it does what I need it to and that fairly well, and only a Month till that big event the gathering of gatherings, oh whatever it’s called somewhere out west.
:) ;)

Not only is the competition going for the Jugular, but they are selling some pretty cool stuff too. So no holding back punches! Newtek needs to have a strong showing at Siggraph.
I've got a feeling Lightwave 8.5 is gonna wow the lot of us.

I have no doubt that they will.
