View Full Version : Better way to move objects in modeller ?
Somebody at work is asking me if there is an easy way to select and move objects.
right now to move an object , we do :
- select 1 poly
- press ] (that select all polys connected to this poly, so the whole object)
- move the object
is there any tool/plugin that would let us do that instead :
-select 1 poly and the plugin AUTOmatically select the rest of the object)
-move the object
anybody knows ?
thanks a lot

I might not understand the question properly, but if you -don't- select anything then everything is selected by default when using the move tool. If you are moving part of something, then breaking it into layers or using a selection list will let you select just part of an object. Or the lasso tool if it's easily encircled.

I think I know what he means, if you have separate geometry on 1 layer and you want to move one part. One of the move tools can be set to 'radial' falloff and that will do it. But I figure out which one it was! I saw the trick posted here a few weeks ago -

The Drag Tool, set Point Radial to a huge distance - 10 Mm for instance - and drag by the corners of the object.

yes, it's what I meant.
we tried the drag tool but it all time move stuff that should not move..
if it's not available , I guess I may try to do a plugin called "object move"
for example and when you will click on 1 face, it automatically select all connected
polys and switch to move mode..

The drag tool set to point radial is the same as the dragnet tool (press ';') . I use this all the time as it's like a 3 dimensional magnet tool, or can be used with massive fall off to move object elements (groups of connected polys).
But to use the drag or dragnet tool you have to click on a point to move the element. I thought there was a way to do it with polygons -
he used other programs and he did not understand why it was so hard to move objects in lw modeller.
I usually move faces.. but after thinking about it, I myself don't understand why it's so hard to move objects..
and also another thing, there is the lasso tool to select, right ? how come you can't press shift for example and have the lasso force itself vertically or horizontally ? that would be so useful I think

You can use Volume mode if you wish to make bounding box selections...

i think this is a great idea. like wings, having an "object" selection mode. sure i'd love to add true edge support to this as well, but considering there's already a select connected command, there's no reason why that can't be integrated into an object selection mode.

The snap drag tool will move the whole connected object too... so long as you check the 'selected points' thing in the numeric options.
Although if you don't want it to snap to anything when you get near you're better off using the other ways. Just giving you more options.

Thank you , that seem to work well.
you really have to know though.. I think it should be easier for people who just start..

yes, that is good if you want to modify the geometry.. but if you want to apply a different surface for example, this volume tool does not work because it does not select the polygon..
