Anyone know if AMD or Intel will release chipsets enabling two dual core CPUs (4 total cores) on one motherboard? That would be a great workstation rendering solution me thinks.

:p

Thunder K8WE (S2895)

this supports dual dual-core, Opteron processors.

some time next year they are "in theory" going to release dual-core xeons. we'll see. however the 2-way opterons are going to be available sometime this month and the motherboard is already available. so yeah that would be fun.

They actually make a 4-way motherboard for servers, Thunder K8QSD Pro (S4882-D)

however xp doesn't support 4 processors, as far as I know, xp will however support dual, dual-core.

I don't know how the optimization would work for quad dual-core, but it seems that would be perfect for the 8 threads lightwave can send out. maybe someone else can answer that question.

also don't know about getting a video card for the server mobo, because it doesn't have AGP or PCIe.

but BOXX makes a machine with dual, dual-core opterons, that is gonig to be able to ship in June they say.

What about the dual core chips that support Hyperthreading? They will certainly display as 4 physical CPUs.

Thanks for the info wellsichris. I didnt know LW was limited to 8 threads. Does that really limit it LW to 8 cores though? LW is able to render to server farms with more than 8 CPUs, so I'm not sure the 8 thread limit means anything. Your thoughts?

LW having 8 threads just means that the renderer can split a single frame across 8 threads. If you use screamernet, you can render multiple frames across 999 cpu's (correct me if that number is wrong). Theoretically, all of those cpu's can be in one machine.

then again, windows server 2003 supports four physical processors ... and has roughly the same core as XP...

They display as 4 CPUs, but are still licensed as one CPU as far as the OS is concerned (and as far as most vendors that do CPU based licensing are concerned as well).

Any current dual socket opteron board supports dual dual core cpus (even the old K8W from 2 years ago). The most that is needed is a bios flash to recognize the CPUs correctly ;)

Thats the beauty of AMD's dual core chips. They were designed from the beginning to be dual core and they fit in today's current batch of motherboards.
