How can i achieve the lighting effects portrayed in this image? She's got a kind of soft glow around her, subtle, but i've seen i more apparent in other images as well. Any tips?

I think I would do it in post, with layers.

top, clean, unblurred character layer, with matte.

character layer, blurred maybe with a little screen mode, with matte. THIS> should get you the 'light wrap', i think they call it.

background layer. on bottom.

Bloom`ll give you something like that in the hotspots.

You might even try using the glow effect in the surface editor attributes, not sure how it might turn out, but its an idea! Bloom would probably be your best bet though!

This is something best done in post.
render your character alone, then in Photoshop/AFX/whatever add the background.

Select the character layer and duplicate it, play with levels on the copy to make a washed out, very contrasted version. Basically you have to move black up, white down, and gamma slightly towards white.

Blur the layer a little, tone down the saturation a bit (you can also change the hue somewhat) and put this layer on "screen" mode over the original. You may have to adjust the opacity to adjust the overall intensity of the effect but the beauty of it is that you can adjust everything about in real time as opposed to re-rendering the scene.

It also helps to add a little noise on the image.

Phil, who's doing it all the time :)
