Stupid Question Alert!

Morning All

Im trying to create a spotlight that is facing downwards. However I cant seem to get the right effect. What Im after is the smokey atmosphere i.e like a comedy club full of smokers. As you can see from below, my light source is hitting the floor but I want to get the whole light beam to show up in a very dark smokey room. Any ideas?

then its just a matter of playing with the textures to make it more smokey than firey.
