Here's a quickie I threw together, after seeing a photo a friend of mine at work showed me. He's a digital photo guy, and he was doing an assignment on eggs, since we're at easter :) After seeing his photo,

There's no SSS type shaders on the candle... this is pseudo-sss. Added film grain with "wave filter image" plugin. Fially, a few tweaks with the levels in PS. No radiosity, just caustics from 1 light source. I was never happy with the reflective surfaces of the floor to begin with, it was tough to re-create the original refletive look on the photo. Anyway, comments welcome.

Oh, one more thing: I found if I used ska with caustics, it would crash LW.. anyone else have this problem? I'm using 7.5b as well.

What about add a bloom filter on the egg? Also the Depth of field is too extreme that losting details on the candle.

I think a bloom filter really helps.

at first I did, but then I didn't like the harsh highlight it cast on the egg--so I decided to go for a softer egg... but yeah, I agree

The problem is your egg that I think is too pale....so the Bloom effect is too strong...

Darken your egg a little bit. also you need to tune the bloom filter.

If this was presented to me as being a photo, I wouldn't doubt it. How did you get those varied specular highlights on the spoon? Very nice metallic material.
And how did you achieve those soft reflections?

hey, thanks all for the great jokes about the egg... I really didn't catch it till after it was all over :D[grin in embarrasment]:D
I really didn't put all that time into my placements. Anyway, the specular highs in the spoon are a result from giving it a pretty wild bump map, so there's a lot of surface irregularity. I then just lowered the final bump value to about 53%. Also, same with the floor surface, I stretched out a honeycomb on the X axis, and added some noise to breake up the surface reflections quite a bit. Plus the DOF helped to blur it out.
