Posted this in the DVD WS area but this seems more like the correct area for the post.

We need support for h.264 (AVC/Divx).

This is now the new encoding method of choice for HD on for both the HDDVD group and the BlueRay group.

I want to be able to encode to the new standard rather than older standards so I can deliver a product that will play today and far into the future.

H.263 (Divx) is now available for some DVD players but my guess it that it will quickly be replaced by H.264.

BTW how about starting by giving us direct support within VT4 for the Divx codec. I can choose the codec but any attempt to render fails.

With the H.264 standard we can easily give DVD-9 quality to a customer on a DVD-5 disk. Of course we can do this with the current Divx codecs but since only a few players support it it is of limited use. Also, there is no support of menus within the Divx standard. H.264 will give us the menus along with extremely effective and high quality compression.

Hi skubacb,

How is Tucson these days?
I'm originally from there.

As for mpeg 4 there should be several new codecs coming out...and I've already use several with VT systems...as long as they are Directshow codecs they sem to work fine with VT...you'll just need an authoring system that will support them...but you can go and buy a H.264 codec now that will work with VT to render out to..

Cheers,

Ray,

Could you list the Mpeg4 codecs you were refering to?? I am working on a project that I need a good compression ratio ie. as close to or better than MPEG2 quality with the smaller size files. AND the kicker.... DRM implemented.

Any experience you can share would be appreciated. You can email me if you like also.

Thanks!

Ray,

Tucson, is growing too fast. Just like any place else that is halfway warm in the winter. If I was in an RV I would continue south until it is actually warm in the winter. Maybe Mazatlan.

I would be quite interested in which codecs you are using and how you are setting up menus to go with them.

I can find nothing that will allow me to use h.263 (h.264/AVC) and burn to a DVD with a menu.

Right now I have the codec (h.263) from www.divx.com but cannot get it to work with the VT4. They are supposed to upgrade it to h.264 soon.

I had been using the beta versions of the main concept codec which worked fine with VT...I will be doing more testing soon with others.

We still have the problem that no one makes a DVD program that uses menus with AVC compressed files. I.E. no VOBs from AVC files.

I am certainly no expert. It would be interesting to know if the new AVC standard will use VOBs or some other new method for setting up the structure when using AVC. Wouldn't it be nice if they just allowed you to write the AVC file without modification. My guess is fat chance. :(
