Howdy Sean.
I've not modelled a house yet, so you can by all means tell me to "go away" if you want!!
I love the detail in the ¿eaves¿ (eves?? :s) and gables. Very nice touches.
Also the twin windows that sit symetrically with the doors, they fit very well.
Maybe you could consider having two chimneys instead of one, and perhaps make them a bit fatter?
Other than that, I like it a lot. Reminds me of some houses I saw in a place called "Celebration" on TV once - almost story book like.
I love to see a render with some textures and stuff!!
Keep up the good work!

VERY important are the proportions. That means, best way to do it is in 1:1 scale.Than you can put everything in poportion, like, measure high of stair compared to the doors....
Seems to me here that some parts are out of proportion on your house (by first glance, space betwen floors-too big,stairs.......)
Hope this helps.Good luck,
danilo

Hey,
Somebody pointed out that you need a big pair of legs to get into my last house, 'cause the steps were gigantic. This is my re-work, also I made the chimney a bit fatter. Any more suggestions? I am relatively new to lightwave, so go easy on me!!!

First impression:
Door handles are much too high. Walk to your door and measure the distance from the floor to the center of the handle.
Otherwise - it's looking great.

I really like it so far, except for one thing. There seems to be way too much space between the first and second floors (or ground and first if you like). If the ground floor has really high ceilings you might want to think about making the windows taller. It just looks like there is a hidden floor half way between the two.
Hope this helps.

Hey,
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Took away that mystery hidden floor, although I would like a house with a secret level!!!
Anyhow, keep the suggestions coming, all is appreciated!
Cheers

Steps are usaully 8"high by 10'deep so as long as you are in this area you should be fine. also just use your on house as refferance window are usaully 24" for baywindows and 32" normal windows from floor. are you going to do inside?. Add some more details like gables or fent like little windows in addict. good start keep going.

Hi,
This is how I have progressed with my first house. Any more ideas??
I am trying to work with different textures, but sometimes they look awful!!

Does anyone know how to put a decent texture to the walls? Not very pleased with what I have.

First off, make sure you check your scale if you're using a brick texture on the walls - if the bricks are too bug, they'll destroy the sense of the size of the house. Otherwise, looks like you've got some major tiling happening on the roof. A bit of futzing in PS should help to clear that up, and a secondary proceedural texture can help to smudge the lines.
It also did me some good to hit google image search and look up the specific textures i was looking for - there are some well stocked free texture libraries out there for the different 3D programs, as well as AutoCAD, etc.
For brick and masonry, try this out - http://www.acmebrick.com/md/index.htm . There's also a similar program for wood planking - run a google on "wood workshop" (I think that's what it's called).

Architecturally speaking I do not like this work. It is probably much too late for this type of crit but here you go anyway. Symmetry is an awful thing to have in most architecture, but particularly in residential architecture. Maybe try to make the units different in some way. Even numbers are not as aesthetically pleasing as odd numbers. Instead of four windows at the center, try three. I think that proportionally it looks very awkward. Try to use the golden rectangle, (3/2) in your proportions. The second floor, as previously stated is much too high. Try moving the doors and windows on the first floor up and use the space from the top of the stairs down to model a foundation. A building like this likely wouldn't have a brick facade, but would probably have some sort of vinyl siding, (cost). Brick is cheap, but vinyl siding is cheaper. For that, I would model the siding. If you still want to use brick, make sure that the scale of your image map is proportionally correct. Take note of how it makes your building appear. If the brick is too big, your building will appear too small, and if the brick is too small your building will appear to big. Play around with the scale of your maps until your house looks appropriately scaled. Lastly, I think that the house is lacking a certain amount of character. Try adding some architectural elements like dormers or bay windows or something. Exterior lights can help too. Keep going on this, I'd love to see how you work it out.

Hey,
How d'you think its coming on. I am kind of fixed with the number of windows etc.. as I am working from an architectural plan. ACME brick program was a great help though!

I'm working on a 3d model of my house I'm going to build and I thought it might help. Its in the begining stage and the window are for placement right now, but you'll get the feel I think people are trying to tell you.

Your house is out or proportion. If the door were 7'-0" tall your house is then 28'-0" tall. Well most residential floor to floor heights with an 8 foot ceiling are approx. 9 feet. So your house is the same height as a 3 story building. What you have shown would work out to a floor to floor height of 14 feet....thats a lot of stairs! Hope this helps....
