animating time-lapse construction

I'm interested in animating a building undergoing timelapse construction. Any ideas on how to do that once my model is finished?

Does it need to be fast like in Time Machine or do you need to see things going on piece by piece?
Are you modelling in phases, like the girders, drywall, bricks, etc?

You could use SG_E to build up..maybe do it in layers...I bet it could work well!
