In dws it say to imort from dvd. So I burnd dvd on a ext Panasonic recorder at 2hr10min . I brought it into DWs and put new chapters in it and seems ok,
My qustion is if the video has been converted to mpeg in another program like tempeg or other. what should the setup be when burning to dvd. that same 2hr10min video shows up as only 2.0 gigs in the burn project to disk window at 1 hr mode. does this mean its recompressing again?
i see its burning alot faster but i just didnt know about dettings for something already converted.

I have been trying to use the video encoded by my Panasonic DVD recorder in DVDWS SE but when I do it comes into the program as 5 min chapters. I simply want all the video. Is there a setting that I have set wrong? It is really irritating to try and piece a 2hr video together after ripping it just to make a fancy menu. Any and all ideas, tips, tweaks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The 5 minute chapter points with stand alone burners is usually a default setting. Look in the Pana menus and see if you can't set long chapters or none at all for the next time.

No change in the Panasonic Burner so 5 min chapters are set in stone. DVDWS may have some setting to put them all in one playback title. If I use "play all titles" there is a visible transition between chapters when it plays. I'll keep looking for a solution...Thanks

FWIW...most standalone DVD burners do not mark the chapters until the dvd is finalized. In some cases you may be able to use the DVD data from the disc in your computer's dvd rom drive prior to finalizing. Unfortunatley in some case or applications you cannot.

Great Information, I'll have to give it a try and see

I really wish the auto 5 min chapter feature could be turned off. It would make it very easy and quick to record the DVDs in realtime then bring into DVDWS for authoring. ALthough the quality may not be as good as doing it in TMPGEnc, the time savings for most event projects would be great!

Even though TMpeg is a great encoder, using the VOB files from my standalone are comparable and save 75% of my time. Once I can get by the 5 min chapter situation I plan to do all my long form encoding that way, if possible. If my DVD ROM will read the VOB files without chapters before finalizing I will be a happy camper. :o

I also suffered nightmares with the 5 min chapters and my panasonic standalone and DVD-WS. I had by accident purchased a 4 pack of DVD-RAM discs from Walmart for about $4.00 each and guess what. The panasonic standalone records on these as one continuous file, unless you want chapters. Simply thansfer this file to your computer hard drive, change the extension to .mpg and import into DVD-WS as one file - magic, problem solved, no audio problems, quality perfect. I hope this helps someone. I love simple cheap fixes.

Unfortunately my DVD drive won't read DVD-RAM discs or I would love that fix. I may try it anyway.....I've been disappointed before.

My DVD drive on the computer will not read DVD-RAM but the pioneer burner on it will read the DVD-RAM.

Thanks I will give that a try!!

Do they make rewritable DVD-RAM discs?

DVD-RAM's are all re-writable. I have a new external 16X NEC 3500ag that won't read DVD-RAM but I do have a Pioneer A04 in the computer. I will have to see if that will read the DVD-RAM

I found a DVD-RAM disc that came with my Panasonic recorder. One question, should I finalize the disc or not?

RayLarson

You cannot finalize a DVD-RAM that I am aware of. DVD-RAM is a rewritable format that is compatible with Panasonic recorders and a few others.

Unfortunately neither of my DVD drives will recognize a DVD-RAM. Only my standalone will read it. Guess I am out of luck.

All I can tell you is that it works very well on my system. This is the only acceptable way that I have found to place our videos onto DVD's with a menu. I use a Panasonic stand-alone and a Pioneer burner on my toaster system. Burn the original from Toaster edit onto the Panasonic using Y/C output and DVD RAM then place the DVD RAM into the burner, import the .vob file onto a hard drive and change the extension to .mpg then import into DVD Workshop as one large file. I have worked with one hour long programs without any problems. I then burn the DVD out to a hard drive as an .iso file and then burn it onto the Pioneer burner using the other Ulead program for video and burning or you could just burn out to a blank DVD.

Hello guys, I'm a newby. My desire is to record from TV on a Panasonic stand-alone to DVD-RAM and then burn to reg. DVD after edits. I recently picked up a HP DVD840 which plays the DVD-RAM (and DVD-RW) just fine (finally!) but I have no audio upon playback. I play CD's just fine so I know I have audio.
It's been a struggle to get to this point. Audio playback on the Panasonic stand-alone is fine. I just don't have it on the computer. I tried changing whatever options I have available as far as playback devices. (I have the Creative Audigy). II've been trying to Googlize the issue. Any ideas welcome. Cheers, Andrew

Hello Andrew,

I'm a little confused.

Are you playing a DVD-RAM in a PC and getting no audio...? Or....?

Are you trying to get footage from a DVD-RAM into the VT?

Or....?

I have some ideas but don't know if I am in the right area....

Hi Jim, Thanks for taking an interest.
As a music nut, my intent is to record VH1 classic videos or interviews of interest on DVD-RAM or DVD-RW via the Panasonic DVD Video Recorder, snip out the ads and reburn the cleaned up and organized video selections to DVD-R from my PC. I can do some editing on the VR but it would be much easier via PC software. So I would be looking for a editing and playback solution on the PC. Needless to say having good video and sound would satisfy me going forward to editing what I have and to the next step of a final burn.

My PC's DVD burner supports DVD-RAM and am able to play the DVD-RAM video directly from the computer's DVD-RAM drive or if I copy the vro file to the hard drive and rename the extension to mpg I get the same result, good video, but no sound. I know I have sound on the DVD-RAM as it plays back normal on the VR and I do know I have sound on the computer as it plays cds and DVDs just fine. At this point I think I need a special codec for the encoded DVD-RAM? If it would have played correctly as a mpg but not from the RAM disk then I might have suspected a need for a driver or firmware update of my drive. Would you agree? However I am not getting a prompt to download a codec from Windows Media player ver. 10 nor from PowerDVD 4.0. I think I even tried Ulead, all with the same results. I don't have a clue which one to look for.

I have the Creative Labs Audigy 2 sound card. I see an AC3 option in the properties plus I have tried all other sound card player options with no luck.

I think if we can get this figured out, it would answer the same question for a good number of people trying to do a similar thing. I downloaded Orion Studio HD demo and didn't have any luck either as it makes my system crawl.

Anyway, am eager to see your response.... :-)
Andrew

P.S. As far as model specifics:

The standalone DVD Recorder is a Panasonic DMR-ES15
and on the PC I have both a HP DVD840 and a Sony DRU 820A
I got the HP for the DVD-RAM option + LightScribe and then a few days later the Sony as it was on sale and thought it was good for a mobile unit (USB enclosure) and in a way I was hoping to get different results (besides a lighter wallet). It appears the burden is to decode what the Panasonic encoded. Thanks again for any help. Andrew

P.P.S. For those of you looking for a DVD-RAM for the computer, the HP I got from Circuit City for about $100 and Best Buy has the Sony on Sale this week for $60 (not bad for a "Multi". Both are internal units. Lights out.... Andrew

This morning I did some more googling and found some discussions on Wombly MPeg wizard and went to their site http://www.womble.com/download/
I downloaded the trial and to my very pleasant surprize I have won back my audio. Also saw good reviews on editing out commercials seemlessly.

Back to more testing....and sorting out tools....

if you record onto a dvd ram disk with your panasonic you can load it drectly into DVD workshop useing the import button down by the time line.
