Here's a female pilot I've been working on for a short film. It's the first time I've modeled anyone in Lightwave and she's nowhere near finished yet.
I've still got to do the helmet, legs and waist.

Well since nobody has posted anything on this one i might as well. In the rear view it looks like her head was put in a vice. Maybe it is just the helmet but her head looks way to thin.

First character?
Nice work, great start, nice texturing. Come back with more.

Thanks for the comments.
Yeah, I think you're right about the top of the cap/helmet. It's a little pointy!
I'll see if I can amend that to a smoother shape.
Here's another picture. Ignore the logo on the breastplate. Bad UV mapping I'm afraid that's since been sorted!

Here's a test render of my pilot in the cockpit. I've built the whole cockpit and aircraft.

VERY, VERY good!! The FIRST thing u'v modelled in Lightwave???

But you must have used every package under the sun before hand!!

Very impressive!
She does seem to be staring quite scarily...... must be the g-force i guess!!

Thanks for the compliments.
Yeah she does have staring eyes. When I've finished modelling the rest of her I'll be doing the facial morphs such as blinking eyes etc. so that should sort that out.

I'll post some pics of the cockpit and aircraft tommorrow.

I'm just interested to know what other packages you've used before!!

and for how long!??

(please say uv been doing it professionally for years, and have only just tried lightwave)

It puts all my texturing to shame really, the skin texture is good too!

Looks like she's got make-up on, and a nice sunbed tan!!

Lightwave is the only 3d package I've ever used. Honestly. I've only been using it about a year. In which time the only things I've ever built are my aircraft, cockpit and this pilot, who isn't finished yet.
I started with Lightwave 5.5 and have since moved up to 7.0.
I use photoshop for the textures.
I'm a graphic designer by trade, so I'm more used to 2d packages such as photoshop and freehand.

How did you texture it? UV or Planar? If UV any pointers on how to help a fellow Lightwaver?

I've been using the UV viewer that you use in Lightwave modeler and taking a screenshot from that. Mostly cylindrical wraps on the Y axis. Then taking that screenshot into photoshop to paint the texture.
I've also used the unwrap plug in which I found on the internet. I actually find this really useful.
By using unwrapped mesh your texture should fit exactly.
To tell the truth I've been avoiding anything more complicated than this method.

Top tip: My original photoshop textures are really big but I've been making them fairly low resolution as jpg's by saving them as web files!

Here's a shot of my cockpit. Since we're on the subject some of the texturing is a little dodgy and I'll put it right later!

Here's the aircraft. This is the first model I made and it took me a long time because I was learning the program at the same time.
As soon as I've finished the pilot I'll be concentrating on a decent desert salt flat type environment. I want the aircraft to kick up a dust storm behind it.

Here's a close up of my pilot's face.
I'd really appreciate some comments on this model or texture.
I've lit her with a warm light which is why she looks a little suntanned!
So please bear that in mind.

The texturing looks great. Her tan doesn't look out of place, if that's something you worried about. Her eyebrows look a bit "painted on", like something out of the '40s, but it's not particularly noticable.

This looks really good. Even the eyes in the last pic are excellent. And I am also fond of the costume/jacket. But if I was forced to find something, it would still be the headgear. Still a little bit pointy and thin in my eyes. And the lips are somewhat not absolutely 100%. (but maybe 99). Maybe the bump is slightly too flat and the coloring slightly too contrasty. Hmmm.. na, maybe I just have to do some extra squinting;)
good work nonetheless

great pilot and the enviro and the planes is nice!
you did a pretty good job texturing everything

The eyebrows are too high up, which give the impression that she is moving very quickly.

Other than that great work.

Thanks for the comments. It's kinda hard to evaluate your own work when youre the only one working on something. I'll bear whatever you say in mind.
I finished the legs last night so I'll post a picture of that once I've had chance to do a render.

This is all very good.
On that closeup, it looks like she's a doll circa pre-1970 as the eyeball is just a ball. Dan Ablans book clearly demonstrates how to do a great eyeball. There may even be tutes on the web for this.

Very good work.

Well gee... the comment about the eyes was totally unexpected! But very much appreciated.
I've been really struggling with the eyes.
I take it you mean a tutorial in the 'Inside Lightwave 7' book?
I'll put it on the list of things to look at and put right after I've finished the rest of her.
