OLD NEWS
Hello everybody.
I would like to announce an animation I'm currently making, based on the Grimm Fairy Tale, The Lady and the Lion. I made the decision to create this animatiom back in August 2002, but only now was I able to put the pieces together for a presentation in a web format. www.theladyandthelion.com This is my own personal project, and it is not subsidized.

I intend this to be a short film length (15-30 min). As I progress more and more informations, imagery, and animations will be available to view. I will also be discussing on the site the "how to's" of the work. Exhibiting how I create this piece.

I'm very excited about this project, and it has become very "real" now that my site is up, and solely dedicated to the project.

I'm looking forward to see some animation. I think there's some real talent at work here. Keep it up! That's a very ambitious project.

I think it’s a great idea, cool to see someone else's thought process and method of work, looking forward to more.

Thanks, hrgiger and Floyd Kurio, I look forward to more work too.
And there will be more this week ( I have a week off from work). I'm re-modeling the dog Demon character as we speak.

Hi Stoehr,

Did you use Magic Bevel for the tree branches?

It looks like you have some flattened branches in there. That is to say they are very elliptical in cross-section.

This may be the look you are going for which is fine, but I just thought I would point it out just in case its not. Its a little more obvious on some of the shots on your site.

Regards

Hey Stewpot,
Good eyes. Actually the tree is a combo of Treecage for the top, and magic bevel on the roots. I used magic bevel on the roots, so I could control how the roots laid on the ground. I really never thought the small amount of squareness stood out in the final render (final render being the top image). Truthfully, I don't think the landscape scene is a final go yet. There are minor things I want to fix. Like the rock merger with the ground. There really isn't a merge between rock and ground. But I will solve this by using carefully placed modeling, like I did with the trees roots.

thanks for pointing that out, I totally missed it. It's been so long since I looked the render closely. I'll make changes to it after I finish modeling my Sentry.

Strange to say, i think, but that troll is beautiful... absolutely gorgeous texture work!!

Very impressed with the site too, all the enthusiasm reminds me of the 'Rust boy' site.

I just have one thing to say about the troll.......wow...

truly amazing work.....the texturing is just fantastic....very very nice...

once again i have to say that the troll is probably one of the best texture jobs ive seen around. Must have taken a very long time to do the troll, but it is well worth it, truly amazing...

I cant wait to see the animation.

Adam and lardbros, thank you.

I've made several additions to the site. Most importantly, a walk with my troll going through mud, and an update to the Sentry model.
walk in Mud (http://www.theladyandthelion.com/trollMudWalk_test.htm)

Man.....the walk cycle is awesome.....

not to much to say about it but that it is amazing...

The troll looks all creepy and hunched over, I love the mood you gave it... very very nice....

The footprints are very well done, I like how you made the troll drag its nails across the mud..very nice touch...

It looks like it is sneaking up on someone..

Cant wait to see the sentry textured... very nice model

As requested, I have a minor tutorial about viscosity in Motion Designer. It illustrates the dramatic differences when changing viscosity. I give the stats on how I did the mud tests, and give minor explanations to some of the parameters.

It has been added to the Tutorials column.

He does have armor on his arms. There will be a slightly different environment for this guy, than there is for the trolls.

His armor is really a way for him to show off. His hide protects him fairly well. Refer to this thread for more info - http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4437

Oh yeah, that's because I updated his image. There was one image where he didn't have anything on his arms. Sorry about that. I just replaced the former image with the current one.

I agree with the other comments...fantastic concept and wonderful work. I do think there's something more that needs to be done with the troll's walk cycle...the torso doesn't react dynamically...needs to move up and down more, and tilt a little in reaction to the movement of the legs, for more of a feeling of weight.

But lord knows, I sure couldn't do as well. I'm only qualified to criticize. :)

Absolutely right. I've been focusing on modeling and texturing more lately. I'm trying to set up my characters to react with and create animations. There will be time for more attentive animation soon. Thanks videobear.

So I'm guessing the higher the viscosity value is the more stiff the plane becomes?

Updated (http://www.theladyandthelion.com/site.htm) An image of the Sentry with UV markers. If wanted, I can go into some length on how I create the maps. I use UV Edit Pro, but I can show how to do the same things without that plugin.

You can also find other information about the process at www.tvpaint.com

To a beginner like me UV mapping looks realy difficult any help in which ever way you can do it would be appreciated Thanks

Are you using Motion Builder to do all the animation in your film? It's just this is one of the programs that we might use for our film, would you recommend it if you are using it?

I'm not sure yet. I'm still very new to using MB. After I've had a chance to get deeper into MB and get my hands onto LW8, then I could give you a better answer.

Currently, I would use MB for all my character animation. It's that good.

Hello Matt,

I like the princesses dress alot. It looks like it will be difficult to animate it with her body. I am interested in how you are going to accomplish this.

I am also looking forward to the completion of her castle.

Keep us up to date on your progress. If you ever want help let me know, I would love to help with models.

Ciao
