Banding Problem on Chrome Text

I'm trying to chrome text and i'm getting a horizontal band as shown in attached file. The surface is set to neutral grey, 5% diffuse, 70% reflection with an incidence angle texture map as a gradient layer. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Check you don't have any non-planar polygons and turn off the smoothing on the front faces of your letters (in fact try and turn it off everywhere except the sides of the letters).

That is sooo funky!
Question, does it look ok in Modeller and Layout "before" rendering? If so, assign everything a 'default' color with no smoothing, if that looks just as weird, I'd go back to your model.
How about a wireframe, (with the stats panel for polys open), may help a bit to tie it down.

I vote it's a smoothing problem. Try turning smoothing off and see what you get.
