Why doesn't VIPER work?

I did a search already and found nothing relevant to my issue (though I did see some cool Dodge Viper models:)

Anyhoo, I've "enabled" VIPER (under rendering menus) and I've hit the Preview>Make Preview in the VIPER console...but it's still black.

Is there something I missed? The manual basically lists the steps above...would it have something to do with my graphics card by chance?

Try opening the surface editor, then with Viper open, do a f9 render. Your camera view should appear in the viper window.
