Personally, I feel that Max is noted as the "industry standard" simply because of it coming from Discreet who was Autodesk etc... and the easy cross platform use between Max, Viz, and AutoCad.

I LOVE LW. It is hands down the easiest 3D app for me personally for modeling. Most people I know in the arch viz industry uses Max, me included for some things. Maybe if we had some talented arch viz LW users cook up some tutorials, guides, and recourses, that would start to change things maybe??

I think it should be called the "pirated standard". That seems to be where it gets it's install base from.

Max is definately the most pirated 3d app out there.

So true.... :D
But, there are two sides to that story. Remember, people who have pirated max can also have pirated LW, Maya, XSI, Houdini watever... The question is: what drives them to max?
I'd say extensive marketing and word of mouth, but also a great tutorial system included in Max's help - pirates don't have manuals.

Also, the fact Max is used for so many game mods out there lend to the piracy issue as well. Kids get games, want to make mods for said game, download illegal copy of Max. I don't know of any games that utilize LW's native format for game mods, is there?

i agree a similar product relevant to LW would be educational.
wasn't there some guy on cgarchitect who was doing one?

what kind of topics would you guys like to see covered?
with all our collective experiences, and diff. backgrounds, surely it would only take 1 tutorial from each member and we would have a set to cover a broad range of topic. just throwing it out there, as a community project..

I can make one of those.
At least if my work on www.except.nl is good enough...

Hervé

well, let's make one together.... if what i do is good enough

www.topixel.net

I know you've got this new technique all set up with lightscape.... :)

I really like your site ! we've got very different styles....

I have built so much over the years on my own I think is time the share.
We all have used techincs from the art peoples point of view and adjusted them to make own tools to produce buildings that people want to BUY!

( take the marker sketches of the 2d elevations (spent as little time as possible scanning,photo,...the images into LW modelers background) now with the images in the Bgs (frt, back, and sides) spent 15-25 mins pulling out simple shapes for the building. then select north facing ploys and change surface name to north elev., repeat for east, west, and south. Open surface editor and planer map the new surfaces with the scanned elevations to north, south, east, and west surfaces, tweek as needed.) Architects love seeing there own sketches in textured OpenGL window moving around there idea before the CAD jokeys opens a new file.

It's time to share

I am not too sure, but I think most architects do 3D (most 3DS max) themselves today (unlike contractors).... at leat most of time, the crap they come with, will suffice to them... :D

Now the problem with contractors is that they dont want to pay a lot (coz they dont understand anything, really...)

I would like to see some tutorials aimed at architectural modeling for lightwave.
My background in residential and light commercial construction and some drafting experience with autocad and cadkey should help me out in this area of lightwave. I love reading books but the tutorials that show step by step seem to click with me, but both books and videos are are the way I learn the best, besides reading a huge book makes me look intelligent!

Sorry to hijack the thread but this area relates to what I am persuing as a career. You guys who post in the gallery do some nice work so maybe some advice to a novice could be in order?
It just so happens I have my eye on a local company here and all they use is 3d studiomax and autocad. It seems most of the clients they deal with all give them autocad files. I have dropped off a resume with them, but alas they want someone with 3Dstudiomax under their belt. Oh well maybe I can get them to buy a copy of LightWave...

The local company is www.howardmodels.com (http://) Poke around thier site and let me know what you guys think. All advice is appreciated.

I get a lot of advertisement agencies too... contracters and real estate companies hiring them to make a folder or something, and then they hire visualisers...
Those people are the worst. They do not only not know about CAD, they also do not now anything about architecture, and often enough not even about design. Sheesh.

One rude advice Darttman (better say now)

look at my site... you have to be much better than me.. or you wont have any job....

This is the rude reality I am facing now... I thought it was good enough... oh boy was I wrong... ding dong... :D ;)

No offense, just an advice... someone else said (I think Lasco) that In arch-viz, the market s....k because it is taken by hand drawn visualizers, he 's right... I mean at least here & in France 80% or arch-viz is a hand drawn render... (I even asked a guy about why it takes those, he said.... much cheaper and much faster than 3D...

Advertising agencies are well... ok... but you have to be really connected to make a living of...

I might re-locate in L.A... my friend Sal is screaming for me to come.....; ahhhh dilemma.... (bye bye wife...)

Also maybe because I dont have a background in Archi, I am put on the side... also that...

Hervé I'm sorry you have trouble finding work but what you say, at least for the northern european and austrlian markets that I know, is simply not true.

I dont know what your prices are but handd rawn impressions are much more expensive! That and the complete inability of the implementation of changes makes 3D the way to go for 99% of the offices out there.

The key ot finding work is to creat the following:

- A Clear and simple website, spcifically targeted at the client you want to get
- A booklet or folder to send to prospective clients containing examples of your work
- Clear costing information, be just a bit cheaper and just a bit faster

If you have those, just call the bastards, go and visit them, talk to them, get ad agencies to take you on as their steady partner. Be flexible. The first few years is hard, you will be scouraging for jobs, but if you consistently take jobs, actively train yourself to be better, you WILL be better. Look at all those godawfull impressions on building announcement boards or in folders of builder companies. You can do better!

There is no way that in france 80 or 90% is handdrawn. I suggest you look at KD Labs long and hard. You can do that too, what they do! If you are up to 50% of what they can achieve, you will be ready to run your company. But running a company and getting clients is, I am afraid, not too dependent on the quality you produce. PErhaps what you make is fine, youre just not trying to be a good company... : )

Ive looked at your website, and there are some nice examples, but its not a professional business website. Its not cut out specifically for a targeted client. Perhaps you should start from there?

Well, Thanks for the advices Exception... they look good..

Unfortunatly I dont have time left anymore to do all that (also I am prety broke right now, so investing in Brochures is out of question)...:o , so I'll move to L.A. in January, and I'll work with at my friend's company (interior decoration firm), so not directly related... but maybe one day I'll come back to LW (as a hobby the next time) :D

... I have no real regrets, (excpet I've lost 4-5 years) because after talking to a few people I know, there did not seam to have enough jobs available here to make a living of it... I dunno the situation in Holland, but I do know People from Holland are always on top market in Europe when It comes to new technology stuff... so I am sure you have more luck there... here also is a tiny country of 400,000 people,... too small...

Thanks anyway !
Herve
