View Full Version : How is Audio output routed in VT[4]?
As the VT NLE is NOT track-based, how does one independently route the audio to the 4 discreet outputs?
Is it done on a per clip basis?
Or am I mistaken in believing it is possible?
Just wondering.

Hi All,
The easiest way to route audio per channel is per clip thru the GUI
See pic....

You need track-based audio in an NLE. Case in point, I was putting together a Mix and Effects track for a feature film's international release. With a M/E track you need a distinct left channel, right channel, sound effects, and language track. With the Toaster I had to output each track individually syncing each to a beta deck. This is an antiquated way to handle audio. With every other NLE (FCP, AVID, etc….) you can output audio to four distinct audio tracks at once if you have the right hardware. This would have saved me a lot of time. You would think with an SX-84 having four balanced outs TED would take advantage of it!!!

I would agree 100%, The Surround sound thing is cool but before I would need that I would want individual track control of my audio. My plan for the 4 channels is L&R Clean Audio on 1&2, SYNC on 3 and Audience Mic on 4.

Using the toolshed with a preset created for panning the audio track to the track you want and then applying this preset to multiple clips is a quick way of routing multiple clips of audio.
True it is not a simple as having assignable tracks, but, if Newtek adopted assignable tracks it would conflict with the (rather nice) freeform tracking system now at the heart of VTEdit.

I think you are missing the point... I want to see a 4 tracks of audio on the time line. That way at a glance I know what is live. For example I did a dance recital with my VT3 on my record deck I feed a mono mix of the music direct from the house mixer into channel 1, on channel 2 I feed a audience mic. Now during my edit I was never 100% sure which audio track was live by looking at the time line. The only real downside I see to making each track visable on the time line is the time it would take for the wav form to be created upon import.
