Hi.

I was just wondering, which in your opinion, is the best graphics card for Lightwave; Nvidia or ATI. I have being doing a lot of research in this area recently, I personally have come to the conclusion that Nvidia cards are the way to go because they offer better Open GL support over the ATI cards.

I am currently saving up for a whole new PC system and to purchase a copy of Lightwave 8. I've been mapping out the PC specs I'm aiming at and have drawn up what I consider to be a powerful system but the graphics card side of the system is still a bit of a toss-up.

You are correct, at least as far as LightWave goes. Search the forums, this topic is done several times a week.

Well speaking as someone who uses both (Nvidia at home ATI at work) Both 128 megs they function similarly. The biggest issue was ati's lack of "span monitors" mode. It wouldn't stretch the display across to screen so you had to constantly reposition your tools windows with LW. But the newest drivers from ati give you that option soooo.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been reading some of the other posts I could find on this topic. It's kind of a mixed bag... Some say go Nvidia, others say go ATI. I think I'll go Nvidia based on the better Open GL support.

Thanks.

I haven't tried an ATI card, but I do run a Geforce FX5900XT with no problems whatsoever.

I used an ATI radeon card around 2 years ago and it couldnt display the grid in lightwave.. so took that back and got a geforce and worked fine.

Then i got a 3d Labs Card Wildcat VP 590 i believe, and that worked fine but couldnt play games.

Just overhauled my whole PC and got a Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb and ive found that the grid is slightly buggy and the general naviagation is troublesome.

I uninstalled Lightwave as i had updated the drivers for the card whilst it was installed and havent got around to reinstalling it yet, but i hope that will fix it, if not then the nvidia 67.77 drivers may help.
